Order before 8:00 PM? Then your front door hardware will be on your doormat the next working day.

Front door hardware is the visible hardware package on a front door. It consists of a backplate (long plate covering the cylinder side of the door), a handle element (knob on the outside + handle on the inside for knob/handle versions, or handle/handle for back door versions), and integrated core pull protection (KTB) that prevents burglars from pulling out the cylinder. Matte nickel is the muted satin silver finish. Softer than cold chrome and more modern than polished brass. It suits luxury classic villas, monumental townhouses, and modern villas with a classic accent. In the matte nickel front door hardware collection from Deurbeslag Expert, you will find models from Intersteel (Dutch since 1959. Three security hardware versions: Helena PC72mm, Front Door Hardware PC72mm and Security Hardware PC92mm Helena, all in matte nickel with integrated core pull protection) and Artitec Mi Satori (Dutch premium. Ball front door knob 60 mm matte nickel PVD with 15+ year UV-resistant PVD coating).

What is front door hardware and what is inside it?

A front door hardware package typically consists of four to five components in a matching finish. 1. Outer escutcheon with cylinder cut-out. Long plate (typically 240-280 mm) that covers the profile cylinder and protects the door recess around the cylinder against direct contact. 2. Integrated core pull protection (KTB). Reinforced steel ring around the cylinder passage that prevents a burglar from pulling out the cylinder with cylinder pullers (a common burglary method with standard rosettes without KTB). 3. Inner escutcheon or rosette. Cover element on the inside for the door handle. 4. Outer knob or handle. In knob/handleversion (typically for front doors): fixed knob on the outside + turn handle on the inside. In handle/handleversion (typically for back doors): turn handle on both sides. 5. Screw fixing. Bolts and M-screws in a matching finish.

Four Intersteel safety versions

Intersteel offers four front door hardware versions in this matte nickel collection. Intersteel Security Hardware Helena PC72mm Matte Nickel. Helena design name, suitable for profile cylinder PC72 (31/41 mm, the most common size for Dutch front doors). With integrated core pull protection. Classic oval escutcheon shape 240-280 mm. Intersteel Front Door Hardware PC72mm Matte Nickel. More general version without Helena design, basic functionality. Intersteel Security Hardware Helena PC92mm Matte Nickel. Same Helena design but for heavier PC92 cylinder (31/61 mm, for doors with widened lock). Intersteel Security Hardware PC92mm Matte Nickel with Core Pull Protection. Front door version with explicit KTB designation, for those who want SKG-equivalent security. All four versions fit standard Dutch front doors with a thickness of 38-60 mm and a backset of 50-60 mm.

Artitec Mi Satori Front Door Knob Ball

The fifth version in this collection is a specific front door knob. Not a complete escutcheon version, but the outer knob that fits existing front door hardware. Artitec Mi Satori Front Door Knob Ball 60 mm matte nickel PVD. Classic spherical knob (60 mm round, ergonomically comfortable handgrip), in a matte nickel PVD finish. Ball represents the classic spherical shape; PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition. An industrial process in which titanium nitride is vapor-deposited onto solid brass under vacuum. Result: 4000-4500 HV hardness (sapphire level), 15+ years UV and oxidation resistant without color loss. For those investing in a 25+ year front door package without maintenance worries. Fits all Intersteel front door hardware versions in this collection as a matching knob element.

PC55, PC72 or PC92. Which size?

The PC size stands for the center-to-center distance between the spindle and the profile cylinder recess on the faceplate. Three common sizes in the Netherlands. PC55 (residential standard, 30/30 mm cylinder). For older residential front doors or interior doors. Not included in this collection because front door hardware is almost always heavier. PC72 (common Dutch front door, 31/41 mm cylinder). Most common size. Three Intersteel versions in this collection are PC72. PC92 (higher security, 31/61 mm cylinder). For doors with a widened lock or an extra-long knob side. Two Intersteel versions in this collection are PC92. When replacing: measure your existing cylinder beforehand (length left-right of the escutcheon) to determine the correct PC size. If in doubt: send us a photo of your existing front door hardware with the cylinder length.

Matte nickel galvanic versus matte nickel PVD

Two different matte nickel finish techniques you will encounter. Electroplated matte nickel (common in Intersteel Helena and front door hardware versions). Electroplated nickel layer on a solid brass or steel core, matte finish. 600-800 HV hardness, UV resistant for 3-5 years before the visible surface begins to oxidize. This is sufficient for the average Dutch front door. Matte nickel PVD (Artitec Mi Satori Kogel front door knob). Premium Italian technology with titanium nitride coating, 4000-4500 HV hardness (5-10× stronger than electroplated), UV resistant for 15+ years without color loss. For a villa-grade front door directly exposed to south-facing sun and rain. Practical difference: after 5 years, electroplated matte nickel on a south-facing front door will show slight discoloration; matte nickel PVD remains unchanged for 15+ years.

SKG**® or no SKG requirement?

An important security consideration when choosing front door hardware. SKG**® (two stars). Tested for 3 minutes of resistance against a hand-tool burglary attempt. Meets the PKVW minimum (Police Quality Mark for Safe Living) and standard insurance requirements for contents coverage. Intersteel front door hardware versions in this collection are of the standard SKG**® level. SKG***® (three stars). Tested for 5 minutes with heavier tools (drill, crowbar). For villa insurance with a premium discount or for front doors directly on the street in backstreet areas. If in doubt: ask your insurer which level is required for your home. For the average Dutch front door in a normal neighborhood: SKG** suffices. For a villa-level property or home directly on a burglary-prone street: choose SKG***® or equivalent.

Combine with other front door packages

Front door hardware is one component of a complete front door design. Front door hardware on backplate head hub for all colors. Matte nickel front door knob for matching fixed knob on the exterior. Nickel back door hardware set for matching handle/handle design on the back door. Security hardware hub for all SKG-certified front door hardware. SKG 3-star cylinders for matching PC72/PC92 cylinders. Matte nickel security rosette and round matte nickel security rosette for matching interior rosettes. For matching facade elements: nickel house numbers, nickel draft excluders, nickel letter plate. For other color front door hardware: matte chrome front door hardware, brushed stainless steel front door hardware, lacquered brass front door hardware. Hubs: nickel door hardware, matte nickel door hardware.

Maintenance of matte nickel front door hardware

Front door hardware is in direct exposure to the weather elements and requires specific maintenance attention. Routine cleaning: once a month, use a damp microfiber cloth with lukewarm water; for fingerprints, add a drop of neutral (pH 7) soap, then wipe dry to prevent water stains. Absolutely avoid: scouring pads, steel wool, ammonia (Glassex), acetone, vinegar, citric acid, and chlorine-based cleaners. With galvanically matte nickel, these can damage the coating layer; with PVD nickel, they are less harmful but should still be avoided. Do not polish: the matte texture is intentionally applied and will become irreversibly locally shiny upon polishing. Lubrication of cylinder mechanism: twice a year, apply dry Teflon or graphite spray into the keyhole (NOT WD-40 or oil. Attracts dust and causes the pin mechanism to seize). Screw check: once a year, check if the mounting screws are still tight. Loose screws reduce effective burglary resistance.

Ordering and advice

Order before 8:00 PM? Then your matte nickel front door hardware will be on your doormat the next working day, provided the product is in stock.
