What exactly is a furniture hinge?
A furniture hinge is a flat, simple hinge specifically designed for cabinet and furniture doors. It consists of two identical metal wings held together by a central pin: one wing is screwed onto the door edge, the other onto the cabinet frame. Because a cabinet door is considerably lighter than a standard door, the hinge can also be smaller and lighter. While an interior door easily weighs fifteen to twenty-five kilograms, a cabinet door usually remains between two and eight kilograms. As a result, a simple narrow hinge suffices perfectly.
In practice, you can recognize the furniture hinge by its flat shape, where both leaves remain visible when the door is open. You will find them on bookcases, kitchen cabinets, sideboards, TV units, and small shutters. At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find furniture hinges from Dulimex, the Dutch market leader in solid construction and furniture hardware for many years. They are available in eight sizes and two finishes, ensuring there is a suitable version for every piece of furniture. This way, you will always find a hinge that fits your cabinet.
When do you choose a narrow hinge and when a heavier model?
You choose a narrow hinge whenever you are hanging a light cabinet or furniture door and do not require heavy mechanics. For bookcases, pantries, kitchen cabinets, and small shutters, this type is more than strong enough. It is designed for quiet, daily use and will last for years without problems on a cabinet door. Only with truly heavy or heavily used doors does a narrow hinge fall short. In that case, you choose a sturdier system.
For standard interior doors and front doors, do not choose narrow hinges, but rather a heavier version with a ball bearing or a removable system. These are designed for much more frequent opening and closing and can support a much higher weight. Therefore, for interior doors, take a look at our ball bearing hinges , and for removable models, at our butt hinges. If you are unsure whether your door is light or heavy, use the upper limit as a guideline and preferably choose one size larger. This will prevent your door from sagging over time.
What size furniture hinge do you need?
You determine the correct size based on the weight and height of your cabinet door. Dulimex supplies eight sizes, from the compact 20 x 15 mm to the sturdy 70 x 51 mm. For a light bookcase door, 20 to 30 mm is sufficient; for a standard kitchen cabinet, choose 40 to 50 mm; and for a heavy wardrobe, take 60 to 70 mm. The first measurement is the length of a door leaf, the second the width. Measure your existing hinge or estimate the weight of your door, and you'll be on the right track immediately.
In addition to the size, the number of hinges per door is also important for a sturdy suspension. For a cabinet door up to 80 cm high, two hinges are sufficient; for 80 to 150 cm, use three; and for a tall door up to 200 cm, use four. Distribute them evenly and place the top and bottom hinges about 50 to 100 mm from the ends. For a long door, place an extra hinge in the middle to prevent the door from sagging. When in doubt, it is better to choose one hinge too many than too few.
Which finish suits your furniture: galvanized or brass-plated?
You choose the finish that suits your furniture based on the color and style of your cabinet. Plain zinc-plated has a neutral, silvery appearance that pairs beautifully with modern furniture and white or light-colored cabinets. Brass-plated, on the other hand, has a warm, golden hue that looks stunning with classic and wooden furniture. Both finishes consist of steel with a protective galvanic coating against rust. For a harmonious look, choose a shade that matches your furniture knobs and handles.
For a sleek kitchen or a white cabinet, plain zinc plating is usually the logical choice, as silver blends beautifully with light tones. If you are working on a 1930s home or a monumental cabinet with warm wood, brass plating provides a more authentic, classic look. Both finishes are available in all eight sizes, so you are not limited by dimensions. If you install the hinge in a damp area such as a basement, keep in mind that the coating requires a bit more attention there. In a dry living room or kitchen, they will last for years without any problems.
How do you install a furniture hinge?
You can easily install a furniture hinge yourself using a screwdriver and, if necessary, a drill bit. First, remove the old hinge, then determine the position 50 to 100 mm from the top and bottom of the door and mark the screw holes. Drill pilot holes with a thin drill bit, approximately 1.5 to 2 mm in solid wood and slightly larger in soft wood to prevent the wood from splitting. Next, first screw the leaf onto the door edge using the accompanying small screws. Tighten firmly but carefully so as not to damage the threads.
Next, hold the door against the cabinet frame in the closed position, mark the holes for the second leaf, and attach it in the same way. Finally, test whether the door opens and closes smoothly a few times without snagging. If everything works as desired, the job is done in a few minutes. For long-term smoothness, give the pin a light Teflon spray once a year; avoid oil or penetrating oil, as dust sticks to it. This way, your hinge will remain quiet and turn smoothly for years.
How do you combine furniture hinges with your other furniture hardware?
You combine furniture hinges best by matching them to the rest of your cabinet and furniture hardware. Choose a finish for your hinges that matches the style of your knobs, handles, and latches, so that everything forms a cohesive whole. For the operation of your doors and drawers, for example, choose matching furniture knobs in the same shade. If you want to keep your doors neatly closed without a lock, magnetic closures are a handy addition. This ensures your cabinet operates smoothly and looks well-maintained.
If you want to take a broader look at everything you need for your cabinets and furniture, you will find it all conveniently grouped together in our collection of furniture hardware. Many Dulimex components complement each other beautifully in style, making the selection process much easier. If you maintain the same finish throughout your furniture, the style runs like a common thread through your interior. This looks calm and well-thought-out, even when guests come over.
