Pull bell
Pull bell. Mechanical doorbell with character for classic front doors
A pull bell is a mechanical doorbell that operates without electricity: by pulling a pull cord or pull knob, you set a clapper bell in motion via a cable, which is audible inside the house. It is the nostalgic, classic variant of the modern electric doorbell and has been a fixed feature of the Dutch facade of monumental buildings, farmhouses, and 1930s homes since the 19th century. At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find pull bells from Intersteel in solid brass, bronze, and black powder-coated finishes. Suitable for both the renovation of original bell installations and new construction with a classic appearance.
How does a pull bell work?
The exterior of a pull bell consists of a pull knob or pull cord visibly attached to the exterior wall or front door. Inside the home, a mechanical cable or pull rod runs through the wall to a clapper bell with a singing bowl. When you pull the knob, the cable moves the clapper, which strikes the bowl. The classic "ting" or "ring" is immediately audible in the hallway or vestibule. Due to the absence of electricity, batteries, or electronics, a pull bell is low-maintenance and free from wiring issues. For a modern addition, some models can be combined with a separate electric bell. This way, you retain the decorative detail on the facade while still getting an audible signal throughout the house.
Dimensions and execution
The bell unit (singing bowl) has a diameter of 10-20 cm depending on the model. Smaller ones for modern, sleek facades, larger ones for monumental buildings where the decorative detail may be clearly visible. Pull cord hanging 50-100 cm; the height of the pull knob is typically 130-150 cm from the ground so that both adults and children can reach it. Mounting via 2-4 through screws through the facade or front door. Use wall plugs for stone facades; countersunk wood screws for wooden front doors. Material: solid brass (varnished or patinated), bronze, or steel with black powder coating. Plate thickness 2-4 mm for sufficient sturdiness for daily use. The internal mechanism contains a cast clapper and copper singing bowl for a warm bell sound.
Which pull bell do you choose?
For a monumental building or a renovated 1930s front door, solid brass is the classic choice. It complements brass door hardware and aligns with the original period style. For a farmhouse or country house, choose bronze or a patinated finish that matches bronze door hardware and antique hardware in the rest of the facade. For a modern new-build or sleek architect-designed home, black powder-coated is the appropriate finish. Combine it with black door hardware for a contemporary interpretation of the classic pull bell concept. In a classic villa with rich detailing, the combination of solid brass pull bell + brass house numbers + brass mailbox creates a complete facade appearance.

Pull bell in your situation
For a listed monumental building, a pull bell is often more than just a stylistic choice: planning regulations and heritage conservation authorities may mandate the preservation of this decorative detail during facade renovation. In renovated 1930s homes, a pull bell restores the panel door's original facade appearance, especially when the door itself remains original with its panel infill, ornaments, and profiled moldings. In farmhouses and country houses, the rustic character of a bronze or patina pull bell complements wooden panel doors and matte black facade fittings. In a classic villa with high ceilings and a marble entrance, the pull bell forms part of a total facade composition of brass or bronze, alongside the house numbers, the mailbox, and the doorknob. For holiday homes and B&Bs, a pull bell is also practical: a visually recognizable facade accent that guests immediately understand, even without explanation.

Installation of a pull bell
Mount the outer part of the pull bell at the desired height (typically 130-150 cm) on the facade or front door. Mark the screw holes with a pencil and ensure the plate hangs level. Drill holes in stone using a masonry drill bit and plug; in wood, pre-drill directly for countersunk wood screws. Always place the bell itself under a slight overhang or protected by a canopy. Direct driving rain shortens the lifespan of the mechanism. On the inside, mount the indoor bell mechanism on an internal wall or ceiling at a height of 2.2-2.5 m. Connect the outer to the inner part using the supplied cable or pull rod and adjust it tightly so that a light pull on the outer knob triggers the bell. Test 5-10 times before tightening permanently.
Maintenance of a pull bell
Pull bells endure the elements year-round: rain, UV rays, and dust. Clean once a quarter with a damp microfiber cloth; for dirt, mild soapy water works. Avoid scouring pads, ammonia, acetone, and acidic cleaners (vinegar, lemon). These damage the patina and the lacquer. For brass, you can apply a thin layer of furniture wax once a year for extra protection against oxidation. With unvarnished natural brass, a deeper copper-like patina develops over 5-10 years. This is exactly the desired classic look and does not need to be sanded away. Lubricate the pull mechanism and the pivot point of the clapper once a year with one drop of dry Teflon spray or graphite; never use oil or grease (these stick to dust and cause the bell mechanism to jam). Regularly check whether the internal pull cord still moves smoothly despite temperature fluctuations.
