Decorative sleeves. Cylindrical cover sleeves for profile cylinders and through-bolt connections

Decorative sleeves are cylindrical metal sleeves that are mounted over a profile cylinder or a through-bolt to neatly cover visible cylinder passages and protruding screw heads in a matching finish. They are primarily used for thinner doors where the cylinder or through-bolt protrudes beyond the door leaf, and for front door installations where visible passages to the security rosette or escutcheon need to be concealed in a finished manner. At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find decorative sleeves from Intersteel, Aprile , and Dulimex in matching finishes with the other door hardware.

Why use decorative sleeves?

The appeal of decorative sleeves lies in two functions. Aesthetic finish. With thin interior doors (35-40 mm), profile cylinders often protrude slightly too far inwards or outwards from the door leaf; a decorative sleeve in the same finish as the rest of the hardware neatly covers this protrusion and ensures a finished look without a visible metal gap. For through-bolt connections. Used for front door hardware where the screws run through the entire door for burglary resistance. Decorative sleeves cover the protruding screw heads on the outside or inside, making the fastening visually inconspicuous. Specifically for PVD door hardware: choose decorative sleeves in the same PVD finish (black, gold, bronze, brass) to maintain visual consistency. A visible metal color that deviates from the rest of the hardware is immediately distracting.

Dimensions and execution

Internal diameter Ø5, 6, or 8 mm. Fits M4, M5, or M6 threads respectively, or the through cylinder screw. Always compare with the existing screw diameter before ordering. Length 10-40 mm depending on the desired cover. Measure the projection of the cylinder or bolt above the door leaf and choose a trim sleeve that fully covers this projection plus a 2-3 mm margin. External diameter Ø10-20 mm for the visible part; larger external diameters provide a more prominent visual effect, smaller ones are more discreet. Material: solid brass with PVD coating for premium applications (15+ years colorfast), stainless steel AISI 304 for a neutral appearance, or zinc die-cut with powder coating for more competitive price points. For classic villas and listed buildings: solid brass without coating for an authentic patina over the years.

When do you choose decorative sleeves?

For thin interior doors (35 mm thickness) where the profile cylinder protrudes from the door leaf: decorative sleeves cover the protruding cylinder passage without the need to choose a new door leaf. For renovations of existing doors where the old cylinder has been replaced with a different size: decorative sleeves visually compensate for length differences without re-routing the door. For PVD door hardware packages where you want a coherent visual result: choose decorative sleeves in the same PVD finish as the door handle, rosette, and optionally the cylinder. For industrial style and modern lofts: black decorative sleeves provide a rugged contemporary look that suits steel-frame doors and concrete elements. For classic villas: solid brass decorative sleeves for matching with brass door handles and patinated hardware.

Installation of decorative sleeves

Decorative sleeves are simply slid over the existing screw or cylinder passage after the hardware has been mounted. For through-screw connections for front door hardware: first mount the escutcheon on the inside, insert the through bolts, and screw the escutcheon in place on the outside. Then slide the decorative sleeve over the protruding bolt on the visible side. For cylinder overhang: slide the decorative sleeve over the cylinder before mounting the security rosette or escutcheon. For fixed mounting, some decorative sleeves can be secured with an M3 set screw through the side wall. Check before installation whether this is suitable for your application.

Maintenance of ornamental sleeves

Clean once a month with a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water; for fingerprints, use a drop of pH-neutral soap. For PVD coating: colorfast for 15+ years under normal conditions, no specific polish required. For solid brass without coating: patina is natural and desirable for classic applications, or polish with brass cleaner to maintain the shine. Avoid scouring pads, ammonia, acetone, and chlorine-based cleaners on coated versions. These irreversibly damage the coating. Specifically for black decorative sleeves: do not use alcohol-based cleaners (these can leave slight shine marks on the matte surface).
