Do you want to properly secure your front door while simultaneously giving it a sleek, timeless look? Then brushed stainless steel front door hardware is the perfect choice. Stainless steel retains its subtle silver-grey tint without peeling, and the brushed finish hides the fingerprints that quickly appear on a front door. At the same time, an SKG-approved escutcheon protects your cylinder against burglary. Whether you have a modern aluminium front door, a white panel door, or a wooden entrance, with the right stainless steel hardware you combine security with a well-maintained facade.

On this page, we explain exactly what brushed stainless steel front door hardware is and what the SKG mark means. You will read about the difference between two and three stars, which measurements to take, which brands we carry, and how to install and maintain the hardware. This way, you can confidently choose the hardware that suits your front door and insurance requirements. Read on!

What exactly is brushed stainless steel front door hardware?

Brushed stainless steel front door hardware is security hardware made of stainless steel with a fine, matte brushed texture, intended to finish and secure your front door. The hardware consists of an elongated escutcheon that covers the cylinder and the handle, with a steel core pull ring behind it that protects the cylinder. Stainless steel of AISI 304 quality has no top layer that can wear off, ensuring the silver-grey tint remains consistent for thirty years or longer. Furthermore, the brushed finish camouflages fingerprints that quickly appear on a front door. This combines a sleek appearance with a long lifespan.

Unlike a purely decorative escutcheon, front door hardware therefore also offers burglary resistance, provided it bears an SKG quality mark. It protects the cylinder against core pulling, a commonly used burglary method in which the cylinder is pulled out of the lock. For a completely secure entrance, combine the hardware with a matching cylinder from our collection of cylinders and view the wider range of security hardware. For coastal locations within ten kilometers of the sea, choose AISI 316, which is more resistant to salt. This way, you tailor the hardware to both the security and the location of your home.

What does the SKG quality mark mean and when do you need it?

The SKG quality mark indicates how well your front door hardware withstands a burglary attempt. SKG, short for Stichting Kwaliteit Gevelelementen (Foundation for Quality Facade Elements), independently tests hinges and locks for burglary resistance and awards stars based on the results. Two stars represent approximately three minutes of resistance and form the minimum requirement of the Police Security Mark for Safe Living, which most home insurance policies stipulate. An SKG-certified escutcheon features a steel core pull ring that prevents the cylinder from being pulled out. Without that ring, the hardware may look nice, but it offers no real protection.

For an easily accessible front or back door, you essentially always need this quality mark, both for your own peace of mind and for your insurance coverage. Therefore, please check exactly what your policy requires before ordering, as some insurers require a specific star rating. For an interior door or a door in a stairwell, a heavy stainless steel escutcheon without a quality mark is sometimes sufficient, as burglary resistance is not required there. So, choose the level of protection that suits the situation for each door. Our specialists will be happy to advise you on the correct class.

What is the difference between SKG two and three stars?

The difference between SKG two and three stars lies in the resistance time and the level of protection. Two stars offer approximately three minutes of resistance and are suitable for a standard terraced house, semi-detached house, or apartment with usual social control. Three stars offer about five minutes of resistance, with a reinforced core pulling ring and extra protection against folding and drilling attacks. This version is intended for corner houses, detached villas, and homes in areas with a higher risk of burglary. The longer a burglar is at it, the greater the chance that he will give up.

For most homes, two stars are more than sufficient, while three stars require a small premium for significantly more security. If you live in a detached house, on a corner, or in a neighborhood with a higher rate of burglaries, that investment is easily made. Keep in mind that the quality mark applies to the entire package: always combine an SKG escutcheon with an SKG cylinder, otherwise the certification becomes invalid. A simple, cohesive choice is therefore a complete front door set, in which everything is coordinated. If you are unsure about the level, our advisors are happy to help you.

What measurements do you need for your front door?

For stainless steel front door hardware, pay attention to four dimensions: the PC dimension, the backset, the spindle, and the door thickness. The PC dimension is the distance between the center of the handle spindle and the center of the cylinder; for front doors, it is usually 72 mm, for older homes 55 mm, and for heavy panel doors 92 mm. The backset of the lock is 50, 55, or 60 mm, and the square spindle is 8 mm according to the Dutch standard. Always check the PC dimension of your existing cylinder lock before ordering. With these dimensions, you can be sure that the hardware will fit your lock.

Additionally, pay attention to the escutcheon length, which is typically between 240 and 280 mm, so that the escutcheon fits neatly on your door without extending over the edge. The door thickness of 38 to 60 mm determines the length of the through-bolts; for a thicker door, order longer bolts. If you are replacing existing hardware, measure your current situation first so that the new escutcheon fits immediately. If you are unsure about any of the measurements, send a photo of your front door and the lock to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl. Our advisors will find the appropriate version for you.

Which stainless steel brands do we carry?

We carry Intersteel, Hardbrass, and Formani in brushed stainless steel front door hardware, ensuring there is a suitable option for every budget and style. Intersteel is the Dutch standard, offering a wide range of SKG-approved escutcheons in brushed stainless steel. Hardbrass focuses on complete, solid front and back door packages, while Formani represents sleek, premium Dutch design. All brands supply hardware that matches standard Dutch cylinder and lock sizes. This ensures you find a version that fits every front door.

Most models are made of brushed stainless steel, with a fine matte texture that hides fingerprints; for a mirrored look, there is also polished stainless steel, which does require a bit more maintenance. For a harmonious facade appearance, match the hardware to your mailbox, house number, and optionally your stainless steel front door knobs in the same finish. This way, your entrance looks like one cohesive whole. Whichever brand you choose, be sure to check whether the SKG level matches the accessibility of your door. Our specialists are happy to help you with this decision.

How do you install and maintain stainless steel front door hardware?

To install stainless steel front door hardware, first unscrew the existing hardware on the inside, often behind a plastic cover. Check if the PC dimension and backset of the new hardware match your cylinder lock; if they differ, replace the lock as well. Slide the spindle through the handle hole, place the escutcheon, and tighten the supplied through-bolts by hand, without overtightening the threads. Then test by opening, closing, and locking the door a few times. The cylinder should turn smoothly and the escutcheon should be securely fastened without play.

Maintenance is minimal: wipe down the fittings approximately once a month with a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water, and for a brushed finish, wipe in the direction of the brush pattern. Avoid scouring pads, steel wool, chlorine, ammonia, and acetone, as these can cause small brown pits even on stainless steel. If you live by the coast, rinse the fittings monthly with fresh water to prevent salt buildup. Lubricate the cylinder a few times a year with graphite powder or a lock spray, and never with oil or WD-40. This way, your front door will remain sleek and well-secured for years to come.
