Do you want to make your front door not only beautiful but above all safer, while giving it a calm, contemporary look? Then a stainless steel doorknob is a choice that proves itself for years to come. A fixed knob does not turn, meaning you can only open the door from the outside with the key, whereas stainless steel retains its sleek silver-grey tint without any flaking. Whether you have a modern new-build home, a sleek aluminium front door, or a classic villa, with the right stainless steel knob you combine burglary resistance with a well-maintained entrance.

On this page, we explain why a fixed front door knob is safer and what the difference is between AISI 304 and 316. You will read which size and brands suit your door, how a knob-on-handle version works, and how to install and maintain the knob. This way, you can confidently choose the knob that matches your front door and home style. Read on!

Why choose a fixed front door knob?

You choose a fixed front door knob because it does not turn, meaning the door can only be opened from the outside with a key. As a result, a burglar cannot push the knob down or operate it through the letterbox, as is sometimes possible with a rotating handle. For a front door with an SKG cylinder and good security hardware, a fixed knob is therefore the standard recommended choice. On the inside, there is a standard handle, so you can still quickly exit the house without a key. This way, you combine burglary protection with everyday convenience.

The knob itself is a link in the larger system of your door security and works best in combination with a solid cylinder and sturdy hardware. For the complete picture, therefore, also take a look at our collection of security hardware with the SKG quality mark and choose a matching cylinder. What is the difference between AISI 304 and 316?

The difference between AISI 304 and 316 lies in their resistance to salt and moisture. AISI 304, with approximately 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel, is the standard quality and lasts thirty years or longer in a normal Dutch climate without discoloration or rust. AISI 316 is a marine-grade quality that also contains about 2 percent molybdenum, which resists chloride attack much better. For an average inland home, AISI 304 is more than sufficient. This is how you choose the quality that suits the location of your front door.

If you live within ten kilometers of the sea, AISI 316 is highly recommended, as the salty air can otherwise cause small brown pits. Furthermore, stainless steel has no top layer that can wear off; the silver-grey color is inherent in the material itself and therefore remains the same for years. This makes stainless steel not only beautiful but also exceptionally low-maintenance. For a harmonious overall look, match the knob to your other stainless steel door hardware. If you are unsure which quality you need, our advisors will be happy to help you.

Which size front door knob fits your door?

You determine the size that fits your door based on the knob diameter in relation to the door leaf. Front door knobs typically have a diameter of 45 to 70 mm: a smaller knob suits a standard new-build front door, while a larger knob is in good proportion with a heavy panel door or an architect-designed home. A knob that is too small looks thin on a large door, while a knob that is too large makes a narrow door look heavy. Therefore, always measure your door before choosing. This ensures the knob remains in proportion to your entrance.

In addition to the diameter, pay attention to the backset of your lock, which is usually 50, 55, or 60 mm, and the PC dimension of 72 or 92 mm for a front door. Check that the PC dimension of the knob, the lock, and the cylinder match, and take into account a door thickness of 38 to 60 mm for the correct bolt length. If you are replacing an existing knob, measure your current situation first so that everything fits immediately. For a thick solid oak door, double-check that the spindle is long enough. If you are unsure about the correct size, our advisors will be happy to calculate it for you.

How does a knob-on-crank version work?

A knob-on-handle design features a fixed knob on the outside and a rotating handle on the inside of the front door. From the outside, you open the door only with the key via the cylinder, because the fixed knob does not retract the bolt. From the inside, you simply push the handle down and walk out without a key, which is convenient and safe in case of fire or urgency. This setup is considered the gold standard for burglary protection on a residential front door. This way, you combine maximum security with everyday convenience.

For a purely passive door that you only open and close, such as some garage or shed doors, you can also choose a knob-on-knob version, with a fixed knob on both sides. For a back door that you need to be able to lock from the outside, you would use a double cylinder with knobs on both sides. However, for most front doors, a knob-on-handle is the right choice. Combine this version with an SKG cylinder from our collection of cylinders for a seamless system. Our specialists will be happy to advise you on the setup that suits your door.

Which stainless steel brands do we carry?

In stainless steel, we carry front door knobs from Intersteel, AXA, and Aprile, ensuring there is a suitable version for every door and budget. Intersteel is the Dutch standard with a wide range of brushed stainless steel, while AXA is known for solid, no-nonsense hardware. Aprile adds a refined, Italian-oriented design for those seeking something special. All models are tailored to standard Dutch front doors and cylinder sizes. This way, you will always find a knob that fits your entrance.

Most knobs are made of brushed stainless steel, a fine matte finish that camouflages fingerprints, which is pleasant on a knob that is touched all day long. For a mirrored, more luxurious look, there is also polished stainless steel, although this shows smudges more easily. Whichever brand and finish you choose, for a harmonious overall look, match the knob to your mailbox, house number, and doorbell in the same shade. For the wider range, also view our collection of brushed stainless steel front door hardware. If you are unsure between two models, our specialists will be happy to help you.

How do you install and maintain a stainless steel front door knob?

To install a stainless steel front door knob, first unscrew the old knob or handle from the inside and carefully remove it. Check if the PC dimension of the new hardware matches your existing cylinder lock; if it differs, replace the lock as well. Next, slide the spindle through the handle hole, place the corresponding handle or rosette on the inside, and tighten the fixing by hand, without a cordless drill. Finally, test by fully opening, closing, and locking the door a few times. The cylinder should turn smoothly and the knob should be firmly secured without play.

Maintenance is simple: wipe the knob with a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water about once a month, and for a brushed finish, always wipe in the direction of the brush pattern. Avoid scouring pads, ammonia, acetone, and chlorine-based products, as these can corrode even stainless steel. If you live by the coast, rinse the knob monthly with fresh water to prevent salt buildup. Once a year, lubricate the cylinder—not the knob—with a little graphite powder or lock spray. This will keep your front door knob sleek and smooth for years to come.
