Matte nickel front door knob
A front door knob is a fixed round or mushroom-shaped knob on the exterior of a front door. Unlike a door handle, it does not turn and therefore cannot be used to open the door. In knob/handle front door hardware, the outer knob functions as both a pull handle and a visual lock element, while the interior features a standard handle to open the door. For burglar-resistant functionality: a fixed knob cannot be turned from the outside. Only the cylinder with the key can lock or unlock the bolt. Matte nickel is the muted satin silver finish that suits classic front doors, Art Deco properties, and monumental renovations. In the Deurbeslag Expert matte nickel front door knob collection, you will currently find one specific model: Artitec Mi Satori Front Door Knob Chemin de Fer matte nickel PVD . An SKG-certified version with an Art Deco Chemin de Fer design and PVD coating for 15+ years of UV resistance.
Artitec Mi Satori Chemin de Fer. Unique art deco design
Artitec Mi Satori is a Dutch premium brand (since 1989) specializing in hardware for monumental and Art Deco buildings. The Chemin de Ferseries is inspired by railway design from the 1920s (the name literally means 'railway' in French). Characteristic design detail: wavy edge profiling on the front door knob reminiscent of railroad track elements. A unique aesthetic for 1920s Art Deco buildings and authentic monumental renovations. Matte nickel PVD finish: Physical Vapour Deposition coating. An industrial process in which a nano-thin layer of titanium nitride (TiN) is vapor-deposited onto solid brass under vacuum. The result is a muted satin silver tint that remains UV and oxidation resistant for 15+ years without color loss. SKG mark: Artitec Mi Satori supplies this model in an SKG-certified version. Tested against attempted burglary with hand tools, with integrated core pull protection in the profile cylinder recess.
When do you choose a fixed front door knob?
A fixed knob is a specific choice with functional and aesthetic advantages. Functional advantage: a fixed knob cannot be turned from the outside. A burglar who could open the lock cannot push the door because there is no handle position. For burglary deterrence on front doors, this is the standard choice in Dutch villa installations. Aesthetic advantage: a fixed knob provides a classic, monumental appearance that revolves around the central visual line of the front door. Suits Art Deco, 1930s, English cottage look, and French classic front doors. Do not choose when: you are fitting a back door (use a handle/handle version there for practical daily use. See nickel set back door hardware); you have a light door with low burglary risk (a standard rotary handle suffices); your door hardware budget is limited (a fixed knob is generally more expensive than handle versions due to SKG requirements).
Matte nickel PVD versus standard electroplated nickel
Two nickel finish techniques you will encounter on front door knobs. PVD coating (Artitec Chemin de Fer matte nickel PVD). Italian premium technology, 4000-4500 HV hardness (sapphire level), 15+ years UV resistant without color loss. Suitable for front doors directly exposed to UV radiation, rain, and frost. For a 25+ year facade investment without maintenance concerns regarding color. Standard electroplated nickel (common in budget versions). Electroplated nickel layer, 600-800 HV hardness, 3-5 years UV resistant before the visible surface begins to oxidize. Fine for interior doors; less optimal for a front door with direct exposure. Practical difference: after 5 years, electroplated nickel on a south-facing front door will already show slight discoloration; PVD nickel remains unchanged for 15+ years. For a villa-grade front door: choose PVD.
Sizes and compatibility with your front door
Three dimensions determine whether a front door knob fits your door. Backset: 50, 55, or 60 mm. Distance from the door edge to the center of the knob spindle. Standard Dutch front door: 55 mm backset. For older front doors (1930s): often 50 mm. Measure your existing lock or ask us for advice. PC size of profile cylinder: PC55 (residential standard) or PC72 (higher security for the door). Artitec Chemin de Fer is commonly suitable for PC72. Single-sided mounting: front door knobs are only mounted on the outside; a rotary handle is typically installed on the inside (separate purchase). Bolt and screw supplement: 38-60 mm door thickness is common. Artitec supplies universal bolts that fit this range. Knob diameter: 50-65 mm is common for a comfortable grip. Chemin de Fer is commonly 55-60 mm round.

Maintenance of matte nickel PVD front door knob
PVD coating is practically maintenance-free, but front door knobs are in direct exposure to the weather elements and require specific attention. Routine cleaning: once a month, use a damp microfiber cloth with lukewarm water; for fingerprints, add a drop of neutral (pH 7) soap, then wipe dry to prevent water stains. Absolutely avoid: scouring pads, steel wool, ammonia (Glassex), acetone (nail polish remover), vinegar, citric acid, and chlorine-based cleaners (bleach). PVD is resistant to many things, but these are exceptions. For rain stains: wipe dry immediately. This is important not only for appearance but also for the cylinder mechanism at the bottom, which must not receive any extra moisture. Lubrication of the cylinder mechanism: twice a year, apply dry Teflon or graphite spray into the keyhole (NOT WD-40 or oil. This attracts dust and causes the pin mechanism to seize). For scratches on the PVD: contact Artitec via Deurbeslag Expert for advice. Sometimes exchange under warranty is possible.
