Brushed stainless steel front door knob. Timeless stainless steel for every front door

A brushed stainless steel front door knob is the logical choice for most modern and classic front doors. Stainless steel AISI 304 (18% chromium, 8% nickel) is an alloy that is fundamentally different from a coating: there is no top layer that can wear off or rust, meaning the front door knob retains the same matte silver-grey tint for 30+ years. The brushed finish (Scotch Brite) conceals fingerprints that would be immediately visible on polished stainless steel. This is especially useful on a front door knob that is touched by everyone every day. For coastal locations within 10 km of the sea, AISI 316 marine-grade is highly recommended for chloride resistance in salty air. By definition, a front door knob is a fixed knob on the outside of the front door that does not rotate. The door can only be opened with the key via the cylinder, not by movement of the knob itself, which offers fundamental burglary protection. At Deurbeslag Expert you will find 11 brushed stainless steel front door knobs from Intersteel, AXA, Hardbrass and Formani.

Why a stainless steel knob for your front door?

The front door knob is one of the most touched elements in the home. Visitors and residents grasp it daily. With coated or gold-plated versions, wear can eventually occur where fingers and palm make contact, resulting in discolored spots. Stainless steel has no coating but a homogeneous surface that retains the same hue for decades. An investment for 25-30 years without replacement. For burglary protection: a fixed knob (instead of a handle or rotary knob) cannot be forced from the inside; the door can only be opened via the cylinder with a key. This is the gold standard for burglary protection: a knob-on-handle version with an SKG cylinder. On the inside, there is a standard handle for opening from the inside without a key. For coastal locations or salty air: AISI 316 marine-grade is a valuable investment that retains its shine in the long term.

Shapes and styles

Mushroom shape is the most classic version. A flat disc with a bulge in the middle, comfortable to hold and suitable for almost any front door style. Spherical shape (fully round) has a traditional look that suits panel doors and classic villas. Round flat (minimalist disc format without a bulge) suits modern new-builds with aluminium frames. Sleek and contemporary. Square provides a clean, geometric look for architect-designed homes with an explicitly modern design. Cranked square (square with beveled edges) is an intermediate variant that is geometric but less sharp than a sharp square. For classic villas, one usually chooses mushroom or sphere; for modern new-builds, round flat, square, or cranked square.

Dimensions and execution

Backset 50, 55, or 60 mm depending on the cylinder lock installed in the door. Verify this by measuring the existing backset of the lock or by finding it in the lock kit. Common PC size is 55, 72, or 92 mm (center-to-center distance between handle hole and cylinder opening). A fixed knob on the outside and a rotating handle on the inside is standard for the knob-on-handle version. Screw bolts suitable for door thicknesses of 38-60 mm; for thicker doors (solid oak over 60 mm): order longer bolts. Knob diameter typically Ø50-70 mm depending on the model. Stainless steel quality AISI 304 for standard Dutch weather conditions, AISI 316 for coastal locations with chloride exposure.

Stainless steel front door knob in your facade

In modern new-builds with a white or anthracite aluminium front door: a stainless steel knob offers the right contrast and matches other stainless steel elements on the facade (mailbox, house number, doorbell button). In classic villas with panel doors in oak or white lacquer: a stainless steel knob is a contemporary choice that does not look too formal. In architect-designed homes with dark front doors (matte black, dark wood, dark grey): a stainless steel knob adds a light accent to a dark visual canvas. In industrial lofts with steel front doors: stainless steel complements the steel material palette. In coastal homes within 10 km of the sea: choose AISI 316 marine-grade for chloride resistance. In monumental villas with classic front door elements: combine with brass or bronze for traditional villas, or keep everything in stainless steel for modern renovation.

Installation of stainless steel front door knob

Dismantle the existing front door knob or handle set: remove the screws on the inside (often behind a plastic cover) and carefully remove the current knob. Check the PC size of the existing cylinder lock. If the PC size is different, you must also replace the lock. Slide the new knob spindle through the handle hole in the door; for thicker doors, check that the spindle is of sufficient length. Install the corresponding handle rosette on the inside and tighten the mounting screws or bolts by hand. Do not use a cordless drill. Test by fully closing and opening the door 5 times. The cylinder must turn without resistance and the knob must remain firmly in place without play.

Maintenance of stainless steel front door knob

Clean once a month with a microfiber cloth and lukewarm water in the direction of the brush pattern. Cross-brushing can leave scratch patterns. Avoid scouring pads, steel wool, chlorine, ammonia, and acetone. These can cause pitting corrosion, even on stainless steel. For fingerprints: use pH-neutral soap and rinse thoroughly, then wipe dry immediately. For coastal locations: rinse with fresh water once a month to remove white salt deposits. Lubricate the cylinder (not the knob itself) once a year with graphite powder or special lock spray. Never use oil or grease (they stick to dust and cause the lock to seize prematurely).
