Brushed stainless steel house number
Do you want your home to be instantly recognizable from the street, with a house number that stays beautiful for years? Then a brushed stainless steel house number is a choice you can't go wrong with. Stainless steel has a neutral, silver-grey tint that looks just as good with red brick as it does with white stucco or dark facade panels. And because the color is inherent in the material, you don't have to worry about discoloration or rusting, even after years of exposure to the elements.
On this page, we help you choose the right brushed stainless steel house number. You will read what makes this material so durable, which height suits your home, and which font matches your facade. We also explain how to attach and mount a house number and how to keep it looking neat. This way, you know exactly what to look out for before ordering. Read on!
What is a brushed stainless steel house number?
A brushed stainless steel house number is a stainless steel facade number with a fine, matte brushed texture. The most commonly used steel is AISI 304, an alloy with approximately 18 percent chromium and 8 percent nickel. Unlike a lacquered or coated number, the color is fully embedded in the material, so there is no top layer that can wear off or discolor. As a result, the number retains its sleek appearance even after twenty years of sun, rain, and snow. It is not without reason that it is the timeless classic among house numbers.
The brushed finish, also known as the Scotch Brite finish, has the pleasant advantage that fingerprints and minor scratches are barely noticeable. Moreover, the neutral silver-grey shade suits almost any facade, from classic brick to modern aluminium cladding. At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find a wide collection of brushed stainless steel house numbers from brands such as Intersteel, Albo, and Allux, in all numbers and letters. If you live within ten kilometers of the sea, preferably choose AISI 316, which is more resistant to salt in the air due to added molybdenum. This ensures your number remains pristine for years, even by the coast.
Which house number height suits your home?
The height that suits your home depends on the distance to the street and the size of your facade. A height of 100 mm is intended for small facades, flats, or interior spaces where everything needs to remain in proportion. 150 mm is the Dutch standard size: clearly legible from the street at a distance of about 5 to 15 meters and in line with PostNL's guideline for recognizability during delivery. For most terraced and corner houses, this is therefore the logical choice. If in doubt, 150 mm is almost always the right choice.
If you live further from the road or have a large facade, choose a larger size for readability. A height of 200 mm suits villas and homes located 15 to 25 meters from the street nicely, or if you consciously want to make a statement. For long driveways, hard-to-see front doors, or very large facades, go for 250 mm or larger, a size often seen on monumental villas and commercial buildings. For a dike house or a high garden wall, where the number needs to be visible from a distance, 200 to 250 mm is also usually the right choice. Always keep the proportion to your door and facade in mind.
Which font do you choose?
The best way to choose a font is to match it to the style of your home. A modern, sans-serif font suits new builds with aluminium window frames, white plasterwork, and sleek facade details. A classic serif font—the small horizontal strokes at the top of the list—matches older homes, buildings from the 1930s, and monumental brick facades. For lofts and industrially styled homes with concrete or steel, there are bold stencil numbers. This ensures the number seamlessly complements the character of your facade.
If you prefer a somewhat more expressive look, you can opt for cursive numbers, which look beautiful against a natural stone facade, for example. If you are unsure about the styles, a modern sans-serif font is the safe, universal choice that works with almost any facade. When choosing, pay particular attention to your front door and other facade hardware so that everything exudes the same atmosphere. How do you attach and mount a stainless steel house number?
You can attach a stainless steel house number in two ways: with screws or with mounting adhesive. Screw mounting is by far the most common method and is done using M5 or M6 stainless steel screws and a suitable plug: a masonry plug for brick, a hammer plug for concrete, and a wood screw for wooden facade elements. Using a spacer of 4 to 10 mm behind the numbers creates an attractive shadow line that enhances readability. If you do not want to drill holes, for example in a smooth stucco, glass, or aluminium facade, you can attach the numbers using a UV-resistant PU mounting adhesive. On rough brick, screw mounting is always more reliable.
The installation itself is easy to do yourself. Mark the position with a pencil and use a spirit level for straight alignment, hold the number against the facade, and mark the drilling points through the screw holes. Drill with the correct drill bit for your surface, insert the plugs, and tighten the numbers by hand so that you do not overtighten the threads. A comfortable height from the ground is 1.5 to 2 meters, with approximately 1 to 2 cm of space between the numbers. Finally, test that everything is securely fastened without moving.
How do you keep your stainless steel house number looking good?
You keep your stainless steel house number looking its best by cleaning it occasionally with the right products. Wipe it down about once a month with a damp microfiber cloth and some mild soap, and then rub it dry for a sleek appearance. For brushed stainless steel, always follow the direction of the brushing pattern and do not polish criss-cross, as this can leave fine scratches. Avoid scouring pads, steel wool, chlorine, ammonia, and acetone, as these can cause small brown pits even in stainless steel. With this simple routine, your number will look like new for years to come.
If you live by the coast, rinse the numbers with fresh water once a month to prevent white salt deposits. If you do see stubborn deposits, a drop of vinegar on a cloth—not directly on the steel—will help, followed by rinsing and drying. Rust formation on AISI 304 is exceptional in a normal indoor climate, but if you see the first signs, clean it immediately. This prevents small spots from developing further. A stainless steel number therefore does not require much maintenance; it is actually made to be left alone.
How do you match your house number to your facade and front door?
You can best coordinate your house number by choosing one in the same style as your other facade and front door hardware. A brushed stainless steel number combines beautifully with matching brushed stainless steel front door hardware, making your entrance look like a unified whole. Ideally, choose your doorknob, mailbox, doorbell, and house number in the same finish to avoid a cluttered look where every element is slightly different. This looks neat and well-thought-out, even when visitors come over. A calm, cohesive entrance completes your entire facade.
If stainless steel doesn't quite suit your facade, you can choose a different shade. For a sleek, modern look, take a look at our matte black house numbers, and for a neutral, complete entrance, our collection of front door hardware. By choosing all components in the same color, the style runs like a common thread through your entrance. If you are unsure about the combination, our advisors are happy to help. Feel free to send a photo of your facade, and we will select the matching version for you.
