Tumbled brass front door knob

Tumbled brass front door knobs are fixed knobs for the outside of the front door used to pull the door towards you. Locking is via a cylinder lock or interior handle. The term "tumbled" refers to a mechanical polishing treatment using ceramic grinding stones that rounds off all corners and leaves a soft, matte texture. Suitable for classic front doors in 1930s homes and monumental mansions. At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find 5 tumbled brass front door knobs from Intersteel (heavy, mushroom, round, PVD ø75) and Artitec Mi Satori (Chemin de Fer antique). Solid brass, M10 thread, for door thicknesses of 38-65 mm. PVD version is UV-stable for 15+ years for south-facing front doors. Order before 8:00 PM? It will be on your doorstep the next working day. For advice, send a photo via info@deurbeslag-expert.nl.

Tumbled brass front door knob. Fixed knob with a soft, matte tumbled finish

A tumbled brass front door knob is a fixed knob for the outside of the front door used to pull the door towards you (unlike a handle used to operate the lock). Therefore, the knob does not turn. Locking is achieved via the cylinder lock key or the interior handle. The term 'tumbled' refers to a mechanical surface treatment in which the solid brass knob is filled with polishing stones and water in a drum, so that all sharp edges are rounded off and the surface acquires a soft, matte texture with natural shading. The result: a calm matte gold tone without a mirror-like shine, ideal for a classic front door in a 1930s home, a listed townhouse, and authentic renovations where polished brass looks too modern.

At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find 5 tumbled brass front door knobs from Intersteel (models: Heavy round, mushroom-shaped, classic round, and PVD version on ø75 mm) and Artitec Mi Satori (1 model: Chemin de Fer in antique brass). All knobs are solid brass with a tumbled finish, M10 thread on an 8-12 mm square door opening, suitable for front door thicknesses of 38-65 mm. The PVD version (titanium-PVD coating 0.8-2 microns on solid brass) is UV-resistant for 15+ years and recommended for south-facing front doors where sun exposure accelerates surface patina.

Front door knob vs front door handle. When do you choose what?

Two front door hardware conventions determine whether a knob or a handle is the right choice:

  • Exterior knob + interior handle (classic). Knob cannot be pressed, locking via lock cylinder, belongs to front door with SKG3 security hardware.
  • Exterior handle + interior handle (modern). Handle operates lock from both sides; applies to interior door and back door without security function.

What does tumbling do to brass

Tumbling is a technique originating from the jewelry industry in which the workpiece is placed in a rotating drum along with ceramic grinding stones, water, and soap. Through tumbling for 4-24 hours, every corner is rounded, every scratch polished, and the surface texture is uniformly matted. The result: a natural-looking brass that feels like it has 'always been this way'. No artificial factory shine. The tumbled finish is not a coating but a physical treatment of the brass surface itself, so in principle, it cannot 'wear away'. However, the brass beneath the tumbled layer does patina over 5-15 years to a warmer golden-brown, which is precisely what is appreciated by brass enthusiasts.

How do you measure a front door knob

Three dimensions determine the fit on your front door: door thickness (38-65 mm. The knob spindle must be able to reach through the door to the inside of the handle), bore (8 or 12 mm square. Measure the existing knob spindle or front door bore), and knob diameter (60-90 mm depending on the model). For mounting on SKG3 security hardware, an M10 thread is standard; for antique front door sets, please consult info@deurbeslag-expert.nl regarding the required mounting kit.

Combine with matching front door hardware

The tumbled front door knob combines with other tumbled brass front door hardware: Tumbled brass front door hardware (SKG3 security hardware), Tumbled brass security rosette, Fully tumbled brass door hardware. For matching front door accessories, see Brass house numbers, Brass letterboxes , and Brass doorbells.

Or choose another brass finish

For the same front door knob models in alternative brass finishes: Lacquered brass front door knob (mirror finish), Unlacquered brass front door knob (patination-free), Titanium-PVD brass front door knob (UV stable for 15+ years). Or in another color: Stainless steel front door knob, Black front door knob , and Bronze front door knob.

Maintenance

The tumbled finish requires minimal maintenance: a damp microfiber cloth with mild soap is sufficient to wipe away hand contact, rain splashes, and pollen. Avoid scouring pads, ammonia, acetone, chlorine, and brass polish. These would disrupt the tumbled structure and leave shine marks. The appearance of a warm brown patina after 5–15 years is normal for unprotected brass; with the PVD finish, the matte gold tint remains identical for 15+ years.
