Polished brass front door hardware
Polished brass front door hardware. Reflective yellow-gold front door hardware for a classic villa
Polished brass front door hardware consists of solid brass with a mirror-polished surface. This is achieved through mechanical polishing using progressively finer polishing paste until the surface exhibits a high-gloss, mirror-like appearance. The difference compared to lacquered brass is that polished brass is supplied without a protective lacquer layer, allowing the brass to patina freely over 2-5 years to a warmer yellow-brown and eventually a deep mocha brown. A conscious choice for those who wish to see the natural aging of brass. A welcome addition to a classic villa, 1930s townhouse, or monumental building, where the hardware is allowed to 'live' with the property. For those who wish to permanently preserve the mirror-like shine without patination, lacquered brass is the alternative.
At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find 2 polished brass front door hardware sets from Dieckmann: Europa with fixed handle and rounded backplate (model D8697M) and Kronos with a rounded backplate. Both are complete security front door fittings with a handle/knob configuration (handle outside, knob inside). This is the classic front door design where the outside handle cannot be pressed and locking is done via a cylinder lock. What does polishing do to brass
Polishing is a progressive polishing process in which the brass surface is treated with increasingly finer polishing paste (coarse → medium → fine → super-fine) until the surface exhibits a mirror-smooth, glossy appearance. When polished (without a lacquer layer), the surface is the final result immediately after the polishing process. No additional coating. Advantage: the natural warm-glossy yellow-gold tint of brass comes through unadulterated, without the visual 'lick' of a lacquer layer. Disadvantage: without protection, brass patinates to a warmer golden-brown in 2-5 years under the influence of air oxide, hand salt, and rain splashes.
Polished vs. lacquered vs. tumbled. Choice
- Polished (this range). Mirror finish, develops a natural patina in 2-5 years; conscious choice for natural aging.
- Lacquered. Mirror finish, acrylic coating for stable color for 5-10 years; no patination.
- Tumbled. Soft matte with rounded corners, mechanically treated; calm appearance without factory shine.
- Unlacquered. Open brass with factory shine, easily patinable; the purest brass experience.
SKG security hardware explained
The SKG quality mark classifies burglary resistance at three levels: SKG1 (15 sec), SKG**® (3 min, PKVW minimum), and SKG***® (5 min, villa-grade). For residential front doors, a minimum of SKG**® is recommended. For the specific certification of these Dieckmann sets, please send a request via info@deurbeslag-expert.nl. We will send you the most recent quality mark report.
How do you measure front door hardware
Four dimensions determine the fit: door thickness (38-65 mm), PC dimension (distance from handle hole to cylinder hole, 55/72/92), spindle (8 mm square standard front door), and handle/escutcheon shape. For a 1-to-1 replacement, send a photo of your old hardware with a ruler to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl.

Maintenance
For those who wish to preserve the mirror shine: polish once a month with brass polish and a soft polishing cloth. Do not use a scouring pad. For those who wish to see the natural patina: use only a damp microfiber cloth with mild soap, no brass polish. Remove splashes of rain or fertilizer immediately, as salt leaching can cause localized dark spots.
