Tumbled brass back door fitting on escutcheon
Tumbled brass back door hardware on backplate. Handle/handle SKG3 security hardware in matte gold finish
Tumbled brass back door hardware on an escutcheon is security hardware for back doors (garden doors, rear entrances) in a handle/handle configuration. A handle on both sides of the door operates the lock. This differs from front door hardware, where a fixed knob or grip is always mounted on the outside (so that the door cannot be opened without a key). For a back door, operation from both the inside and the outside with a handle is acceptable because the lock itself determines the locking mechanism. The tumbled brass finish is mechanically processed by rotary tumbling with ceramic grinding stones. It provides a subtle matte gold tint without factory shine, ideal for classic villas, monumental townhouses, and 1930s homes where the back door visually feels the same as the front door.
At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find 4 tumbled brass back door hardware sets from Intersteel: 2× Luzern Oval in PVD finish (PC72 and PC92, oval rosette shape) and 2× Jura handle/handle SKG3 with core pull protection (PC72 and PC92, classic rectangular elongated escutcheon). All 4 are SKG3 certified (5 minutes burglary resistance, compliant with villa-grade security level). PVD finish is UV stable for 15+ years. Relevant for south-facing back doors where solar exposure would accelerate surface patina in unprotected brass.
Back door vs. front door. Hardware conventions
Two Dutch attachment conventions:
- Front door. On the outside a fixed knob or handle (cannot be pressed), on the inside a lever handle. Locked via cylinder lock. Reason: without a key, the door cannot be opened from the outside, even if the cylinder were to be tampered with.
- Back door (this range). Handle on both sides. Both handles operate the lock, and the cylinder lock determines locking. More practical for a garden door where residents frequently go in and out; security is provided by the SKG3 cylinder itself.
PC72 vs PC92
The PC dimension is the distance between the handle hole and the cylinder hole in the lock:
- PC72. Standard back door with SKG2/3 cylinder; fits most standard interior door locks.
- PC92. For heavier or oversized cylinder locks and specialist back door installations. Always measure the existing PC beforehand before ordering.
What is core pull protection
Core pulling protection is a recessed steel rosette in the security fitting that prevents a burglar from securing a screw or claw key in the cylinder core and forcibly pulling it out of the lock. Core pulling is responsible for approximately 60% of successful cylinder burglaries in the Netherlands. Core pulling protection is mandatory for SKG3 classification; in this range, core pulling protection is standard on all 4 sets.
How do you measure back door hardware
Four measurements determine the fit: door thickness (38-65 mm), PC dimension (72 or 92), spindle size (8 mm square standard back door), and the overall escutcheon/rosette dimensions. When replacing existing hardware, send a photo of the door with a ruler and a photo of the old hardware to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl.
Combine with your tumbled brass front door
For a consistent facade look, combine the back door with a matching front door package: Tumbled brass front door hardware, Tumbled brass front door knob, Tumbled brass security rosette, Full tumbled brass door hardware.
Or choose another finish
Back door hardware in other brass finishes: Lacquered brass back door hardware on backplate (mirror finish), Unlacquered brass back door hardware on backplate (patination-free), Titanium-PVD brass. Or in another color: Stainless steel back door hardware on backplate, Black back door hardware on backplate.
Maintenance
Monthly damp microfiber cloth with mild soap. Do not use scouring pads, ammonia, acetone, or brass polish on the tumbled finish. PVD versions accept the same treatment for 15+ years. Cylinder lock: a drop of graphite lock lubricant in the keyhole once a year (no oil or WD-40).
