Is the hardware on your back door worn out, or do you want to replace it all at once with something that looks neat and is well secured? Then a set of back door hardware on a rosette is the smartest choice. In such a set, the two door handles and the cylinder rosettes are already coordinated in the same finish, so you don't have to puzzle over separate parts. Especially for a back door, which is often less visible than the front door, a sturdy, burglar-resistant design is of paramount importance.

On this page, we explain what is included in such a set and why a back door deserves extra attention. You will read which SKG level you need, which measurements to take, and which finish suits your home. We also tell you what else you need to make your back door complete and secure. This way, you can choose the right set with confidence. Read on!

What is included in a set of back door hardware on a rosette?

A set of back door hardware on a rosette contains everything you need to equip your back door with new hardware in one go. The set consists of two door handles, one for the inside and one for the outside, plus two cylinder rosettes that cover the profile cylinder hole on both sides. Mounting hardware is included: M4 screws for the average back door thickness and, for SKG versions, through-bolts that grip deep into the door. Everything comes from the same series, so the finish and shape match seamlessly. This way, you get a complete and cohesive set in a single order.

It is important to note that the set itself does not include a cylinder; you select this separately, matching your PC size and the desired SKG level. At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find back door hardware sets on rosettes from Intersteel, AXA, and Dulimex, in all common colors and SKG versions. If you prefer to combine components yourself, for example with a non-standard cylinder PC size, you can also choose individual handles and rosettes. For the corresponding cylinder, please view our collection of cylinders. However, for most back doors, a ready-made set is the simplest choice.

Why is a back door particularly vulnerable to burglary?

A back door is particularly vulnerable to burglary because it is less visible from the public than the front door. Burglars often choose the rear specifically, because social control is lacking there and they can go about their business unseen. Statistically, back doors are therefore more frequently targeted by burglary attempts. Consequently, burglar-resistant hardware on your back door is at least as important as on your front door. A complete set with an SKG-compliant design ensures that the entire system offers sufficient resistance.

The through-fastening plays a key role in this. With an SKG set, the handles and rosettes are secured with patent bolts driven straight through the door, instead of with loose wood screws that only grip the door leaf. As a result, a burglar cannot simply pry the hardware loose to access the lock. Combine the set with a matching cylinder and a reinforced strike plate for a complete burglar-resistant package. This significantly reduces the risk and ensures you meet the requirements of the Police Security Mark for Safe Living.

Which SKG level do you need?

The SKG level you need depends on the location of your back door. For a standard ground-floor terraced house, SKG two stars is the minimum required by law, providing approximately three minutes of resistance against burglary tools. For a corner house, a detached house, or a back door directly adjacent to public space, SKG three stars is recommended, offering about five minutes of resistance. The less social control there is, the higher the level you should choose. This allows you to tailor the security to the actual risk.

A set with SKG-compliant versions ensures that the hardware as a whole meets the requirements, provided you combine it with a suitable SKG cylinder and a good strike plate. Also, check exactly what your insurer requires, as a certain star rating is sometimes mandatory for coverage. If you are unsure whether two or three stars is sufficient for your situation, consider the accessibility of the door. View our collection of security hardware. Our specialists are happy to help you determine the right level.

Which sizes do you need?

For a set of back door hardware on a rosette, pay attention to the PC dimension, the spindle, the backset, and the door thickness. The PC dimension is the distance between the center of the handle and the center of the cylinder, and for a back door, it is usually 55 or 72 mm, depending on the cylinder installed. In the Netherlands, the spindle is almost always 8 mm square and fits common mortise locks. The rosettes are round with a diameter of 50 to 53 mm or square measuring 50 by 50 mm. With these dimensions, you can be sure that the set will fit your lock.

Additionally, measure your door thickness, as this determines the length of the through bolts; a back door is typically 40 mm or slightly thicker. If you are replacing worn hardware, always measure your existing backset, PC dimension, and spindle thickness before ordering so that the set fits immediately. If you are replacing old classic hardware with a more modern package, a new cylinder is often also required to match the dimensions and the SKG class. If you are unsure about any of the measurements, please send a photo of your door and the lock to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl. Our advisors will select the matching set for you.

Which finish do you choose?

Choose the finish that best suits your facade and, if possible, aligns with your front door. A continuous facade where the front and back doors share the same shade looks the calmest and most polished. For a modern back door in a new build, brushed stainless steel and matte black are popular, timeless choices, while a classic wooden back door with brass hardware looks beautiful with solid brass or bronze. For a luxury home with gold accents, extend the golden tone to the back door. This way, the hardware becomes a natural part of the whole.

In terms of material, preferably choose solid metal with a PVD coating or stainless steel in AISI 304 quality, as a back door is exposed to more weather conditions than a front door. A PVD coating remains colorfast for fifteen years or longer, even under UV exposure, and stainless steel is highly resistant to moisture. Avoid hollow, thin versions, as these do not last as long on an exterior door. For a harmonious overall look, maintain the same finish as your complete front door set. If you are unsure between two shades, our advisors will be happy to help you make a choice.

What else do you need for your back door?

In addition to the set, you need a matching cylinder and a few additional parts for a completely secured back door. Choose an SKG cylinder in the correct PC size, a reinforced strike plate, and preferably safety hinges with an anti-burglary claw, so that the door remains in place even during an attempted break-in. Together, these form the complete burglar-resistant package that accompanies the hardware. This way, you combine a neat appearance with robust security. After all, the hardware alone does not make a door burglar-resistant.

For the hinges, choose a model that matches the weight of your back door; view our collection of hinges. Clean your back door hardware approximately once a month with a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water, and avoid scouring pads, ammonia, and acetone, as these damage the coating. Lubricate the handle mechanism and bolts once a year with a dry Teflon spray and check twice a year that the through-bolt fastening is still secure. This will ensure your back door continues to operate smoothly and remain well secured for years to come.
