Polished brass back door hardware on escutcheon
Polished brass back door hardware on backplate. Handle/handle set for back door in mirrored brass
Polished brass back door hardware on an escutcheon is security hardware for back doors (garden door, rear entrance) in a handle/handle configuration. A handle on both sides of the door operates the lock. This differs from front door hardware, where a fixed knob or grip is always mounted on the outside (so that the door cannot be opened without a key). For a back door, operation from both the inside and the outside with a handle is acceptable because the lock itself determines the locking mechanism. The mirror-polished brass finish is achieved through progressive polishing with increasingly finer polishing paste. It exhibits a high-gloss appearance without a protective lacquer layer, allowing the brass to patina freely over 2-5 years to a warmer golden-brown. A deliberate choice for classic villas, 1930s townhouses, and monumental buildings where the back door visually feels the same as the front door.
At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find 2 polished brass back door hardware sets from Dieckmann: Europa with a rounded backplate (model D8648M) and Kronos with a rounded backplate. Both are complete handle/handle sets with an elongated backplate covering the handle hole area. For the specific SKG certification and associated certification report, please contact us via info@deurbeslag-expert.nl with a photo of your front door.
Back door vs. front door. Hardware conventions
Two Dutch attachment conventions:
- Front door. On the outside a fixed knob or handle (cannot be pressed), on the inside a lever handle. Locked via cylinder lock. Reason: without a key, the door cannot be opened from the outside, even if the cylinder were to be tampered with.
- Back door (this range). Handle on both sides. Both handles operate the lock, and the cylinder lock determines locking. More practical for a garden door where residents frequently go in and out; security is provided by the SKG cylinder itself.
Polished vs other brass finishes
At the time of purchase, polished is visually identical to lacquered. Both have a mirror finish. The difference lies in the long-term performance:
- Polished (this range). No protective layer, develops a natural patina in 2-5 years; natural aging, repairable with brass polish.
- Lacquered. Acrylic coating for stable color for 5-10 years.
- Tumbled. Soft matte surface without factory shine.
- Titanium-PVD. 15+ years UV stable.
How do you measure back door hardware
Four dimensions determine the fit: door thickness (38-65 mm), PC dimension (distance from handle hole to cylinder hole, 55/72/92 mm. Measure your existing lock), spindle (8 mm square standard back door), and the escutcheon dimensions. For a 1-to-1 replacement, send a photo of the door with a ruler and a photo of the old hardware to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl.
Combine with your front door package
For a consistent facade look, combine the back door with a matching front door package: Polished brass front door hardware, Polished brass security rosette, Full brass door hardware. For hinges: Brass ball bearing hinges. For facade accessories: Brass house numbers, Brass mailboxes, Brass doorbells.
Or choose another finish
Back door hardware in alternative brass finish: Lacquered brass back door hardware on backplate, Unlacquered brass back door hardware on backplate, Tumbled brass back door hardware on backplate, Titanium-PVD brass back door hardware on backplate. In other color: Stainless steel, Black.
Maintenance
For a mirror-like shine: polish monthly with brass polish and a soft polishing cloth. For natural patina: use only a damp microfiber cloth with mild soap. Apply one drop of graphite lock lubricant to the cylinder keyhole annually (no oil or WD-40). Remove rain splashes immediately to prevent localized dark spots.
