What exactly is a nickel door handle?
A nickel door handle is a horizontal handle with a nickel-colored finish that you push down to open the door. Door handle and doorknob are two words for the same component: the most commonly used operating element on Dutch interior doors. Because you press a handle down with your whole hand, opening it requires less force than with a round knob that you have to turn. This is pleasant for intensive daily use and beneficial for those with less strength in their hands. The nickel finish provides a warm, muted silver tone.
In this collection, you will find 67 nickel door handles, all with a rosette: two small rosettes of approximately 50 to 53 mm round or 50 by 50 mm square. This compact variant looks great with both classic and more modern interior doors. If you are looking for a version with an elongated backplate, please take a look at our collection of backplate door handles. For matching rosettes in the same shade, please see our nickel rosettes.
Which interior suits a nickel door handle?
A nickel door handle looks best in classic and monumental interiors with a warm ambiance. The muted silver tone complements 1930s homes, townhouses, and properties with authentic details beautifully, where gleaming chrome would often appear too cool. Even in a modern villa with a classic accent, nickel adds just that warm, refined touch. If you choose a glossy finish, it looks somewhat richer and more elegant; matte nickel, on the other hand, is calmer and more contemporary. This way, you decide for yourself how much classic character you give your door.
For a cohesive look, coordinate the shade with your other interior choices, from your lighting to your hinges. For example, if you love a warm, classic atmosphere, nickel combines beautifully with wood and soft colors. If you want to explore everything in this shade more broadly, you will find it in our collection of nickel door hardware. If you are unsure whether nickel suits your home, our advisors are happy to help. A photo of your door and interior will be very helpful in this regard.
Which brands of nickel door handles can you find?
In nickel door handles, you will find four brands, each with its own positioning. Intersteel is the Dutch mid-segment brand and has been the market leader for over thirty years, with trusted series such as Ton Basic, Ton Rosewood with a wooden handle, Ton Premium, Courgette, Antonnet, and Trento. Stile is the Italian premium brand with organically shaped models such as Yuza, Salta, Ava, and Goya. Formani is the top Dutch brand that collaborates with architects such as Piet Boon, Eric Sijmons, and Marcel Wanders, with classic series like the 1910. Thus, there is a suitable handle for every budget and every style.
The fourth brand is Artitec Mi Satori, a Dutch premium brand that has specialized in monumental hardware since 1989, featuring Frankfurt and Bauhaus door handles in a polished nickel finish with wooden or ebony grips. Popular models include the Intersteel Ton Basic and Ton Palissander for renovation, the Stile Yuza for a sleek, organic design, and the Formani 1910 in polished nickel for a monumental mansion. If you are unsure whether to choose budget or premium, our specialists will be happy to assist you. Also, take a look at our wider collection of Intersteel door handles.
What measurements do you need for a nickel door handle?
For a nickel door handle, pay attention to the rosette size, spindle, drilling distance, and spindle length. The rosettes are round with a diameter of 50 to 53 mm or square measuring 50 by 50 mm, with Intersteel often supplying square ones and Stile and Formani usually round. The spindle is standard 8 mm square, the Dutch standard for interior doors. The drilling distance between the mounting screws is typically 38 mm center-to-center. Always measure your existing situation when replacing a handle so that it fits immediately.
The length of the spindle ranges from approximately 35 to 100 mm, depending on your door thickness; for a standard interior door of 38 to 45 mm, 35 mm is usually sufficient. The backset of the lock in residential construction is typically 50 mm, and the handle grip is usually 110 to 130 mm long. The matching M4 screws are supplied in the same nickel color. If you are unsure about the correct size, please send a photo of your door and lock to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl and we will take a look with you.
What is the difference between electroplated nickel and PVD?
The difference between electroplated nickel and PVD lies in the hardness and colorfastness of the finish. Electroplated nickel is the most common and economical technique, in which a nickel layer is applied to brass or zinc. Indoors, this finish is highly resistant to daily use and retains its beautiful colorfastness under the influence of light for about three to five years. You will find this version primarily at Intersteel and on some of the Stile and Formani models. For most interior doors, this is more than sufficient.
PVD is a higher-quality coating technique in which the layer is applied in a vacuum chamber, resulting in a much harder and more colorfast finish that remains stable for fifteen years or longer. You will see this version at Artitec and part of the Formani collection. For an interior door, electroplated nickel is usually sufficient, while for a frequently used door or a high-end project, it is better to choose PVD. Both finishes are low-maintenance, as you can read below.
How do you combine and maintain nickel door handles?
The best way to combine nickel door handles is by choosing your other hardware in the same shade. Coordinate your handles with your rosettes, hinges, and locks so that everything looks like a unified whole. For matching parts, take a look at our collections of nickel door handles on rosettes and nickel rosettes. By maintaining the same finish throughout, the style runs like a common thread through your home. This creates a calm and polished look.
Maintenance is simple: wipe the handle with a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water about once a month. Do not use polishing paste and avoid ammonia, acetone, and vinegar, as these damage the nickel finish. With electroplated nickel, this keeps the color looking good for years, and with PVD nickel, the finish remains colorfast for much longer. Nothing more is needed, so you can enjoy your door handles for a long time.
