Door handles on escutcheon

Backplate door handles are interior door handles with an elongated metal backplate on which the handle and key/cylinder hole are located together. Suitable for classic residential interior doors or for renovating existing doors where older screw holes need to be covered. We carry models with Intersteel backplate door handles (Amsterdam 250x55mm and others), the AXA Curve Click system for easy installation, Differnz Dutch Design with city names (Utrecht, Tilburg, Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam), plus classic versions in all finishes.

Do you have a classic interior door or a panel door that you want to give a refined, traditional look? Then a door handle on an escutcheon is a beautiful choice. With this type of hardware, the handle and the keyhole or cylinder are located together on a single elongated plate, the escutcheon, which neatly displays the entire operation. It looks somewhat more stately than separate rosettes and therefore fits beautifully with older homes and country-style interiors. And because the escutcheon provides generous coverage, it is often the practical solution during a renovation as well.

On this page, we explain exactly what a backplate door handle is and the different versions available for your various doors. You will read which brands we carry, which finishes suit which doors, and which measurements to take before ordering. We also explain how to ensure the backplate aligns perfectly with your other hardware. This way, you can choose the right handle for your doors with confidence. Read on!

What exactly is a door handle on an escutcheon?

A door handle on an escutcheon is a version where the handle and the lock opening sit together on a single elongated metal plate, usually around 250 by 55 mm. This escutcheon covers both the handle and the keyhole or cylinder, creating a calm and cohesive appearance. The terms door handle on escutcheon and door handle on escutcheon refer to exactly the same product. This version often fits best in a classic home, as it has a somewhat more traditional and elegant character. Functionally, the handle works exactly as you would expect.

An escutcheon is also handy during renovation, for example when removing old hardware and leaving screw holes or a large lock recess. The elongated plate neatly covers these imperfections, ensuring your door looks presentable again without the need for filler or repainting. If you prefer a sleeker, more modern look, take a look at our collection of door handles on rosettes. You can find the full range of escutcheon models in our collection of door handles on backplates. This way, you can immediately see which version suits your door.

Which versions of the shield can you choose?

Which version you choose depends on the lock in your door and the function of the room. A blind escutcheon has no opening and is intended for an interior door without a lock, such as a living room or passageway door that only closes with the handle. A version with a keyhole, often indicated as SL or key 56 mm, corresponds to a classic lock with a mortise key. For a modern cylinder, choose a PC version, with PC 55 for interior doors and PC 72 for front doors. So, check which lock your door has before making a choice.

For a bathroom or toilet, there is a backplate with a toilet lock, often featuring a WC size of 63 mm and a rotary knob with a vacant/occupied indicator on the inside. This allows you to lock the door from the inside and see from the outside whether the room is occupied. If you are unsure which size you need, measure the distance between the center of the handle and the center of the lock. When renovating, choose a backplate size that generously covers the existing recess. Our advisors will be happy to help you determine the right version.

Which brands do we carry?

In this collection, you will find backplate door handles from both accessible and premium brands. Intersteel is the Dutch standard with classic models such as the Amsterdam, measuring 250 x 55 mm, in finishes such as black, stainless steel, brass, and chrome. AXA uses the convenient Curve click system, allowing you to mount the backplate without visible screws, including the rounded Milan design. Differnz adds Dutch Design to this with series named after cities such as Utrecht, Tilburg, Rotterdam, The Hague, Amsterdam, and Groningen. This ensures there is a suitable model for every style and budget.

If you appreciate a classic, luxurious look, Hardbrass offers Italian brass for a stately villa with the Mariani line. The Differnz series comes in shades such as gold, bronze, gunmetal, and black, while Intersteel primarily covers more neutral, timeless colors. Whichever brand you choose, be sure to ensure the escutcheon matches the style of your door and your interior. For a renovation, a solid Intersteel is often an excellent choice, while Hardbrass is the place to go for a real statement. Our specialists are happy to help you choose the right series.

Which finish suits your door?

You choose the finish that suits your door by matching the shade to your interior and the atmosphere you are looking for. Black and matte black give a modern, sleek look, while brushed stainless steel is neutral and timeless and suits almost any door. For a classic or country interior, lacquered brass and tumbled brass are a warm, traditional choice. Matte nickel strikes a nice balance between classic and modern in terms of atmosphere, while chrome adds a shiny accent. This way, you will find a suitable color for every style.

If you love a luxurious, classic entrance, gold instantly adds more character to your door, while bronze complements a warm, country atmosphere beautifully. For a harmonious overall look, it is best to choose a single finish and apply it consistently to all your doors. If you wish to furnish your entire home in the same shade, it helps to look at each color individually, for example in our collections of black door hardware and brass door hardware. This way, the style runs like a common thread through your home. If you are unsure between two shades, order one model first to examine at your leisure.

How do you measure a door handle on a backplate?

You measure a door handle on an escutcheon by paying attention to the spindle, the PC or key size, the backset, and the door thickness. For an interior door, the spindle is standard 8 mm square, the Dutch standard. The PC size is the distance between the center of the handle and the center of the cylinder: allow 55 mm for interior doors and 72 mm for front doors. If you have a classic lock with a mortise key, look at the key size instead of the PC size. With these measurements, you can be sure that the escutcheon fits your lock.

Additionally, measure the backset of your lock, or the distance from the front of the lock to the center of the spindle, which is often around 50 mm in residential construction. If you are replacing existing hardware, choose a backplate size that generously covers the old recess and any screw holes. Also check your door thickness to ensure the spindle length is correct. With a new door, you are free to choose and are not tied to anything. If you are unsure about the correct size, send a photo of your door with a ruler to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl, and our advisors will take a look with you.

How does this fit into your interior door package?

A door handle on an escutcheon looks best in your interior door package when coordinated with your other hardware in the same finish. Combine the handles with matching hinges and locks so that everything looks like a unified whole. For example, if you choose matte black for your interior doors, extend that theme to your hinges and doorstops. This creates a calm, cohesive look throughout your entire home. It appears neat and well-thought-out.

For your front door, you should also consider burglary resistance, as safety is at least as important there as appearance. A security version with an SKG quality mark and core pull protection protects your cylinder; view our collection of security hardware. Stick to one type consistently within your home—for example, a backplate on all your interior doors—for a harmonious look. If you are unsure about the right combination, our specialists will be happy to put together a suitable package for you. Feel free to send a photo of your door and interior.
