Lock cups
Lock cups. Catch for window latch and espagnolet
Strike plates catch the bolt of a window latch or espagnolette when you close a window, ensuring a neatly locked window that does not rattle in the wind. It is an indispensable part of a complete window hardware system. The window handle or espagnolette does not function correctly without the corresponding strike plate in the frame. At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find 18 strike plates from AXA, Intersteel , and Nemef in various sizes, shapes, and finishes. For both wooden and synthetic window frames.
How does a strike plate work?
On the inside of the window is a window latch or espagnolette. This is a mechanism with a metal bolt (pin) that moves outwards when you turn the window handle to the closed position. The strike plate is the counterpart in the frame: a recessed metal cup with a matching recess for the bolt. When the window closes, the bolt falls into the cup; the window is then locked and cannot be blown open by the wind. Due to the precise fit between the bolt diameter and the cup recess, the window does not rattle in the presence of wind or vibrations. Strike plates are typically 9-14 mm deep and have a drilling distance of 38 mm center-to-center between the mounting screws. This is the Dutch standard for window hardware. With espagnolettes (which operate multiple locking points via a single central lever), multiple strike plates are required: one per locking point.
Shapes and dimensions
Round strike plates are the classic shape for casement windows. Most commonly used in renovations of wooden frames where the original plate was round. Oval strike plates are elegant for narrower frames where a round plate would be too wide. Rectangular strike plates suit modern frame styles with clean lines and angular geometry. Deep strike plates are used with espagnolettes with a longer stay where a standard depth of 9-11 mm is insufficient. For these models, a depth of 14 mm is common. Drilling depth: 9 mm for light window stays, 11 mm for standard window stays, 14 mm for heavy espagnolettes. Drilling distance of 38 mm centre-to-centre is the Dutch standard; deviating distances only occur with older or foreign models. Screw size: M4 chipboard screw or 3.5 mm wood screw. Always check the existing holes before ordering.
Which finish do you choose?
For modern new builds with white frames: white strike plates in RAL 9010 or 9001 for a color match with the frame. For anthracite or black-grey frames: black strike plates in matte black RAL 9005. For classic villas with brass or patinated fittings: nickel strike plates for a softer, classic look. For modern, sleek frames with chrome handles: chrome strike plates for a bright, matching shine. For barns, outbuildings, and commercial buildings where visibility is less important: galvanized strike plates as an affordable and durable standard. For monumental applications or with brass door fittings: solid brass strike plates for a consistent classic appearance.

Locking plates in your situation
In modern new-builds with white frames, white powder-coated strike plates work best because they visually blend into the frame color. There are no distracting metal accents. In classic homes with wooden frames in a natural color or dark wood, brass or nickel strike plates match the other brass or nickel elements. In corner houses and ground-floor homes with direct street access, we preferably recommend SKG-certified strike plates with a deeper bolt recess for extra burglary resistance. A standard strike plate can be pried out with a bolt grip of approximately 6 mm; an SKG version sits at 12-14 mm with reinforced screw anchoring. In renovations of 1930s homes where the original strike plates are worn, the oval or rectangular model often offers a better fit on the existing wood recess than a new round model that requires re-milling.

Installation of a strike plate
First, mark the position on the frame where the bolt of the window latch or espagnolette will fall when the window is closed. Close the window slowly and observe where the pin touches the frame. Drill the bolt recess to the correct depth (9-14 mm depending on the model) using a suitable wood drill bit; no pre-drilling is required for wooden frames, but use suitable metal plugs for uPVC frames. Place the strike plate flush in the recess and secure it with the supplied screws (typically 2-4 per plate). Test by opening and closing 5-10 times. The bolt should fall into the plate without resistance and return without jamming.
Maintenance of strike plates
Strike plates are typically partially built into the frame and are relatively protected from the elements. Maintenance is therefore minimal. Clean once a quarter with a microfiber cloth and lukewarm water; for dirt, mild soapy water works. Avoid scouring pads, ammonia, acetone, and chlorine-based cleaners. These damage the powder coating or nickel-plated layer. Check once a year that the mounting screws have not come loose due to window vibrations and that the handle of the window latch still falls correctly into the recess. In case of a stiff-operating mechanism: lubricate the handle recess once a year with dry Teflon spray. Never use oil or grease, as this attracts dust and causes the handle to jam.
