Window latch

A window bolt is a classic locking mechanism where a pivoting metal bolt rests on a strike plate on the frame. A simple, reliable, and authentic mechanism that has essentially worked the same way for over 100 years. Suitable for monumental homes, renovations of classic 1930s properties, and country-style interiors where you desire a traditional look without a modern lock. Standard mechanical version or with an SKG*®-approved cylinder lock for 1 minute resistance time. Hand-side left or right (viewed from the hinge side); the most common replacement mistake is ordering the wrong way around. Length 95-150 mm, screw size M4 or M5 with pre-drilling in hardwood. Zinc die-cast (zamac) with epoxy coating in black, white, F1 aluminum, or stainless steel finish. For monumental and country homes. Not ideal for modern uPVC frames from 2000 onwards. From Dulimex (DX series). Order before 8:00 PM? Then your window bolt will be on your doorstep the next working day, provided the product is in stock. Unsure about a hand-side or a standard vs. SKG*® cylinder lock? Send a photo of your window to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl. We'll help you decide.

Do you own a listed building or a classic 1930s property and want your windows to retain their authentic character? Then a window latch fits that wish perfectly. This traditional locking mechanism, in which a swiveling metal hook engages with a strike plate on the frame, has essentially worked the same way for over a hundred years. It is simple, reliable, and gives your wooden windows a nostalgic look that a modern window handle would never provide. If your old latch is stiff or one is missing, you will find the right replacement here.

On this page, we will calmly explain exactly what a window latch is and how to choose between a standard and a lockable version. You will read how to determine the correct opening direction, which measurements to take, which finish suits your window, and how to install and maintain the latch yourself. This way, you can be sure you are making the right choice for both atmosphere and convenience. Read on!

What exactly is a window latch?

A window bolt is a classic window lock in which a pivoting metal hook, known as the bolt, falls over a strike plate on the frame. By lifting the bolt and swinging it to the side, you open the window, and by letting it fall back, you lock it again. It is a purely mechanical lock without complicated mechanisms, which makes it so low-maintenance and durable. It is precisely this simplicity that ensures the mechanism has been used virtually unchanged for a century. As a result, it fits seamlessly with windows where you wish to preserve the original style.

At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find Dulimex window latches from the DX series, finished in zinc die-cut with a durable epoxy coating. You can choose from the colors black, white, F1 aluminum, and stainless steel, ensuring the latch matches any type of frame. The strike plate fits standard Dutch window profiles dating back to the 1950s. If you would like a more modern alternative with greater ease of use, take a look at our collection of window locks. This way, you can immediately see which solution best suits your window.

Do you choose a standard or a lockable version?

You choose a standard or a lockable version based on how important burglary resistance is for that window. The standard window latch only has the pivot mechanism: you lift it and swing it to the side to open. For interior windows, monumental windows, and outbuildings where security is not a priority, this is more than sufficient. The lockable version has a small key cylinder integrated into the latch, blocking keyless swinging. This way, you combine the classic look with a first layer of burglary resistance.

The lockable DX version bears the one-star SKG quality mark, which represents approximately one minute of resistance to burglary tools. For easily accessible hardwood windows on the ground floor, this provides extra security without compromising the authentic appearance. If you wish to secure a window in a higher-risk location more firmly, a lockable window handle with a higher SKG rating is the better choice. Therefore, select the level of protection that suits the situation for each window. Our advisors are happy to help you.

Which direction of rotation do you need?

You determine the direction of rotation by looking at the window from the hinge side, just like with a standard window handle. If the hinge is on the left side, you need a right-handed lever that swings to the left when opening; if the hinge is on the right, choose a left-handed lever. This is crucial when replacing, because a lever with the wrong direction of rotation swings in the opposite direction and will not fit the existing recess. For Dulimex DX models, the direction of rotation is usually clearly stated in the product name. Therefore, always check this before ordering.

If you are unsure which side you need, base your decision on your current situation and look closely at the location of the hinge. A handy reminder: stand on the inside and determine left or right from the pivot point. If you are replacing a worn stem, it is wise to keep the old one as a reference. This prevents you from having to drill again or receiving the wrong model. If you are unable to determine the direction, please send us a photo of the closed window with the hinge visible.

Which measurements are important for a window latch?

The most important dimensions for a window latch are the length of the strap and the center distance between the screw holes. Depending on the model and window size, the strap is typically 95 to 150 millimeters long, while the center distance between the screw holes is usually 30 to 40 millimeters. It is secured with M4 or M5 screws, which are often included. With these dimensions, you can be sure that the new latch fits neatly onto your window. Therefore, always measure your existing situation before ordering.

The material is zinc-plated, also known as zamac, finished with an epoxy coating for colorfastness, or provided with a stainless steel finish. For hardwood windows, it is advisable to pre-drill the screw holes with a 3-millimeter drill bit to prevent the wood from cracking. If you are replacing an older model, compare the length and center-to-center distance of your old window with the new one. This ensures the holes align and you do not need to drill again. If you have any doubts about the dimensions, our specialists will be happy to assist you.

Which finish suits your window?

You choose the finish that suits your window by matching the color to your frame and the atmosphere you are looking for. Black epoxy is popular for modern, industrial renovations where you combine the traditional mechanism with a contemporary, dark shade. White epoxy, on the other hand, is intended for white frames, where you want the tree to blend subtly into the overall design. F1 aluminum, a light gray powder coating, complements aluminum frames and sleek architecture beautifully. This ensures there is a suitable look for every type of window.

If you like a rugged, authentic look with good corrosion resistance, the stainless steel finish is a great choice, even for somewhat damp environments. The Dulimex DX window stays are not available in a brass color, so if you are looking for a warm, classic shade, you can incorporate it elsewhere in your window hardware. A window stay or other accent in a matching color can complement this nicely. For a harmonious overall look, it is best to stick to one finish for all your window hardware. If you are unsure between two shades, compare them to your frame color.

How do you install and maintain a window latch?

To install a window latch, hold it against the window profile in the closed position and mark the screw holes and the position of the strike plate. Pre-drill the holes with a 3-millimeter drill bit for M4 screws or 4 millimeters for M5, and drill slightly deeper for oak or beech to prevent cracking. Then screw the latch in place, tightening the final turns by hand, and attach the strike plate to the frame exactly where the latch sits. If you are replacing an old unit, first check the direction of rotation and the length, and use the existing drill holes where possible. Finally, test about ten times to ensure the latch swings smoothly and closes with a firm click.

For maintenance, lubricate the swing arm once a year with a dry silicone or Teflon spray; do not use WD-40 or oil, as these attract dust and eventually leave a dirty film on the coating. Clean the latch approximately monthly with a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water, and avoid scouring pads, ammonia, acetone, and vinegar, which can damage the epoxy or stainless steel layer. If you have the lockable version, lubricate the cylinder annually with a little graphite powder through the keyhole. Also, check once a year that the mounting screws are still securely tightened, as the latch absorbs force with every movement. With this little bit of attention, it will continue to operate smoothly for years.
