Do you want a door that doesn't take up valuable floor space while simultaneously forming a beautiful accent in your interior? Then a sliding door system is exactly what you are looking for. Instead of swinging, the door glides smoothly along the wall or between two rooms, leaving you room for furniture and passage. Whether you are furnishing a narrow hallway, a walk-in closet, or an open kitchen, with the right system your door slides smoothly and the overall look is polished.

On this page, we explain exactly what a sliding door system is and why you should choose one. You will read about the different types available, the required rail length and load capacity, the finishes we offer, and how to maintain the system. This ensures you choose the right rails and rollers for both comfort and style. Read on!

What exactly is a sliding door system?

A sliding door system is a complete set consisting of a rail, roller carriages, and end stops that allows a door to slide smoothly to the side instead of swinging. The door hangs from rollers running along the rail, while a guide at the bottom prevents the door from swinging sideways. Because the door does not swing open, it does not take up space for furniture or a passageway, which is ideal in tight spaces. Furthermore, the visible railwork above the door forms a beautiful architectural element.

At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find 35 sliding door systems from Intersteel and Dulimex, in all common finishes and load classes. This covers both light interior doors and heavy solid or glass doors. Why choose a sliding door system?

You choose a sliding door system because it saves space while simultaneously providing a modern look. A hinged door has a turning radius of about 80 to 90 cm in front of the door that you cannot use for furniture or passage, whereas a sliding door leaves that space completely free. This makes a sliding door ideal in narrow hallways, walk-in closets, and small spaces where every centimeter counts. Moreover, the visible rail forms a deliberate design detail that fits beautifully into an industrial or minimalist interior.

In addition, modern systems run wonderfully quietly and smoothly thanks to ball-bearing rollers and soft-close damping. The door comes to a gentle stop in the final centimeters instead of slamming shut, which is pleasant and safe in a household with children. The load capacity is also high: standard systems support 80 to 120 kg per door, and reinforced versions up to 200 kg. This allows you to slide even a heavy solid oak door or a glass and steel door smoothly.

What types of sliding door systems are there?

There are a few main types of sliding door systems, each with its own appearance and installation method. With a surface-mounted system, the rail is mounted visibly to the wall above the door, which is the most popular and visually striking model. With a recessed system, the rail is concealed within the lintel or a suspended ceiling, so that only the carriages remain visible for a sleeker look. A pocket system allows the door to disappear completely into a hollow wall, the most discreet solution, although it does require a prepared wall structure.

Additionally, you can choose extra comfort options that make use more pleasant. A version with soft-close allows the door to close gently in the final centimeters, while soft-open does the same when opening a heavy door. For glass doors, there is a version with clamps that secure the glass panel without the need for drilling. Which type fits best depends on your wall, your ceiling, and the desired look. If you are unsure, our specialists are happy to help.

What rail length and load do you need?

Determine the correct rail length based on at least twice the width of your door, plus 50 to 100 mm of extra clearance. An 80 cm door therefore requires a rail of at least 160 to 170 cm, so that the door can slide completely alongside the opening. For a pocket system, count on approximately three times the door width, as the door must fit entirely into the wall. Measure your door carefully before ordering, so that the door opens smoothly and fully.

You match the load capacity to the weight of your door leaf. Standard systems support approximately 40 to 80 kg, premium versions 100 to 120 kg, and heavy-duty versions up to 200 kg for solid oak or combinations of glass and steel. Leave sufficient space above the door for the rail, typically 10 to 15 cm. Also, do not forget the bottom guide, as it keeps the door straight and prevents it from swinging. With this information, you can choose a system that supports the door reliably and for years to come.

Which finish suits your interior?

You choose the finish that suits your interior based on the atmosphere you are looking for. Matte black provides a rugged, industrial look that complements a loft or a sleek modern interior with steel and wood. Brushed stainless steel is neutral and timeless and fits well with a modern villa with large glass panels. A classic antique finish, on the other hand, aligns with a monumental or country home with traditional fittings. By matching the rail to your other hardware, the system becomes a natural part of the space.

For a harmonious overall look, maintain the same shade for your door handles, hinges, and grip. If you choose black for your sliding door, take a look at our collection of black door hardware to coordinate everything. If you want to explore a wider range of sliding door solutions, you can find them in our sliding door hardware. This way, the style runs like a common thread through your home.

How do you maintain a sliding door system?

You maintain a sliding door system by keeping the rail clean and lightly lubricating the rollers so that the door continues to run smoothly for years. Wipe the rail approximately once a month with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth, and if there is dirt in the profile, vacuum the rail with a vacuum cleaner and crevice nozzle. Avoid scouring pads, ammonia, and acetone, as these damage the powder coating and PVD coating. A clean rail prevents the door from snagging or squeaking.

Additionally, lubricate the roller ball bearings approximately once a year with a dry Teflon or silicone spray, and never use oil or grease, as this attracts dust and blocks the movement. Check annually that the rail mounting is still firmly secured to the wall, as a loosened rail can cause the door to sag when carrying a heavy door. If you have a version with soft-close, check that the damper is not leaking and replace it immediately if there is an oil leak. With this simple maintenance, a system will last 15 to 20 years.
