Do you want to give your interior doors a sleek, timeless look with hardware that can take a beating? Then stainless steel door handles are a great choice. Stainless steel is neutral, hygienic, and exceptionally durable, and suits almost any interior, from modern and industrial to rustic. You grip a handle dozens of times a day, so it is nice if it feels smooth in your hand and stays beautiful for years to come. Whether you are refurbishing a single door or tackling your entire home, the right stainless steel door handle sets a polished tone.

On this page, we help you choose the right stainless steel door handle. In the Netherlands, we use the words door handle and door knob interchangeably; they refer to the same small lever used to operate the lock. You will read about the available versions, the difference between a solid and a hollow knob, and the brands we carry. We also explain how to measure and combine the knob. This way, you know exactly what to look for before ordering. Read on!

What are stainless steel door handles and why choose them?

Stainless steel door handles are door knobs made of stainless steel for your interior doors, in a neutral, matte silver shade. You choose them because stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, scratch-resistant, and hygienic, and suits almost any interior. Unlike a coated handle, stainless steel has no top layer that can wear off, meaning the color remains sleek even after years of intensive use. This makes it a safe, timeless choice that you won't quickly tire of. Furthermore, the material is suitable for damp areas such as the bathroom.

Stainless steel has been one of the most popular finishes for interior door hardware for years, precisely because it is so neutral and durable. You will find the shade in all variations, from ultra-thin, minimalist handles to solid premium models. If you would like to view the full range of stainless steel for interior doors, please also take a look at our collection of stainless steel door handles. Which stainless steel versions can you choose?

You can choose from three stainless steel finishes, each with its own distinct look. Brushed stainless steel has a finely brushed surface with a subtle line pattern and a matte appearance, making it less prone to fingerprints. Polished stainless steel, on the other hand, is shiny and reflective, creating an elegant, classic look. Matte stainless steel has a completely matte appearance, ideal for an extremely sleek, minimalist design. Thus, the finish largely determines the appearance of your door.

Which finish suits you best depends on your interior and your preference. For a modern interior door in daily use, brushed is often ideal because it makes an industrial statement and camouflages fingerprints. Polished looks beautiful in a classic or luxury home, and matte stainless steel suits an understated, design-oriented interior. For a completely matte look, take a look at our collection of matte stainless steel door hardware. For a harmonious overall look, choose one finish and use it throughout your entire home.

What is the difference between a solid and a hollow stool?

The difference between a solid and a hollow stool lies in the construction and the feel. A solid stainless steel stool is made entirely of solid metal, which you notice in the weight in your hand and the sturdy, high-quality appearance. A hollow stool is hollowed out on the inside, making it lighter and more affordable, but it feels less solid. The premium Italian models from Aprile, such as the Sulla, Luna, and Fragola, are, for example, made of solid material. This way, you notice the difference at the very first touch.

Which one you choose depends on your budget and how important the feel is to you. For a home where you enjoy the handles daily and seek a luxurious look, a solid handle is the most beautiful choice. For a simple renovation or a less frequently used door, a hollow version suffices perfectly. Moreover, a solid handle generally lasts longer because it is more resistant to intensive use. If you are unsure between the two, our advisors would be happy to help you decide.

Which brands do we carry?

In stainless steel, we carry brands for every budget and style. STERK specializes in ultra-thin versions, such as the OVAL 1750 at just 3 mm thick, for an extremely sleek and minimalist statement. Aprile supplies solid Italian premium stools in models such as the Sulla, Luna, Fragola, and Arabis. Intersteel is the Dutch standard, featuring, among others, the Blok on a square rosette in brushed stainless steel. Thus, there is a suitable model for every taste.

Formani adds premium Dutch design with the BASICS LB series, such as the LB7-19, LB2-19, and BSQ, which look sleeker and more modern than classic versions. AXA, on the other hand, is easy to install thanks to the Curve click system, which allows you to mount the handle without visible screws. Whichever brand you choose, make sure the handle matches the style of your door and your interior. For a renovation, a solid Intersteel is often an excellent choice, while for a design statement, you can turn to Aprile or Formani. Our specialists are happy to help you.

How do you measure a stainless steel door handle?

You measure a stainless steel door handle based on the spindle, the rosette or backplate size, and the door thickness. For an interior door, the spindle is standard 8 mm square, the Dutch standard. Many stainless steel handles sit on a rosette, either round or square, which must be larger than your existing recess to cover it neatly. The door thickness of an interior door is typically between 38 and 44 mm. With these measurements, you can be sure that the handle fits and the old holes are covered.

If you are replacing an existing handle, also measure the drilling distance of the screw holes so that the new handle fits into the same holes immediately. If you are working with a cylinder or toilet lock, also pay attention to the PC dimension, which is usually 55 mm for interior doors. With a new door, you are free to choose and are not tied to anything. If you are unsure about the correct size, send a photo of your door with a ruler to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl. Our advisors will then take a look with you.

How do you combine stainless steel door handles in your home?

The best way to combine stainless steel door handles is by choosing your other hardware in the same stainless steel finish. Coordinate your handles with your rosettes, hinges, and locks so that everything looks like a unified whole. For example, if you choose brushed stainless steel for your interior doors, carry that theme through to the rest of your hardware. For your front door, choose matching stainless steel security hardware with the SKG quality mark in the same shade. This creates a calm, cohesive look throughout your entire home.

Because stainless steel shades from different brands work well together, you can confidently combine them without the colors visibly deviating. If you prefer certainty regarding a perfect color match, choose within a single series. If you are looking for a slightly different silver shade, chrome is shinier and nickel somewhat warmer. If you are unsure about the right combination, send a photo of your door and interior to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl. Our specialists will be happy to put together a suitable package for you.
