Do you want to give your doors a sleek, modern look with hardware that stays looking well-maintained for years, without the harsh shine of chrome? Then matte stainless steel door hardware is exactly what you are looking for. The fine satin finish provides a calm, timeless metallic tone that looks just as beautiful with a white kitchen as it does with warm wood or a sleek grey interior. And the best part: fingerprints and water stains are much less noticeable on it than on mirrored hardware. Whether you are furnishing a new-build home or completing a renovation, matte stainless steel sets a polished, contemporary tone.

On this page, we will calmly explain exactly what matte stainless steel door hardware is and how it differs from polished stainless steel. You will read about the difference between AISI 304 and 316, why a PVD coating stays beautiful for so long, and what the EN1906 durability class means. We also tell you which brands we carry, how to measure your door, and how to coordinate everything neatly. This way, you can choose the right version for your doors with confidence. Read on!

What exactly is matte stainless steel door hardware?

Matte stainless steel door hardware consists of stainless steel interior and front door fittings with a matte, satin finish instead of a mirrored shine. This matte appearance is achieved by brushing the steel or by a matte PVD coating, resulting in a fine, uniform texture. The major advantage is that touch, fingerprints, and water stains are much less noticeable than with polished hardware. As a result, your door looks well-maintained for longer, even with intensive daily use. It is a neutral shade that combines effortlessly with virtually any interior color.

At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find over a hundred models in matte stainless steel, one of the largest interior door collections in this finish. You can choose from door handles, key and cylinder escutcheons, toilet sets, and complete handles on escutcheons, allowing you to finish an entire door in the same style. The shade pairs beautifully with modern new builds, sleek renovations, offices, and industrial interiors. What is the difference compared to polished stainless steel?

The difference compared to polished stainless steel lies entirely in the surface finish. Matte stainless steel has a satin, brushed, or matte coated finish that looks calm and contemporary, while polished stainless steel has a bright, mirror-like sheen that appears more classic and lighter. Fingerprints and water stains are barely visible on matte fittings, whereas they are very noticeable on polished fittings. Functionally, both are equally strong; the difference is purely visual and lies in ease of maintenance. Therefore, for a modern, low-maintenance look, you usually choose matte.

Which one you choose depends on the atmosphere you are looking for and how much maintenance you want. If you like a sleek, contemporary look and want to do little cleaning, matte stainless steel is the logical choice. If you appreciate a shiny, classic accent, polished stainless steel suits your door better. In a busy family or a rental property, matte usually works best because it always looks well-maintained. What is the difference between AISI 304 and AISI 316?

The difference between AISI 304 and AISI 316 lies in the corrosion resistance of the steel used. AISI 304 is the standard stainless steel and offers excellent resistance to corrosion in a normal indoor space, such as a living room, bedroom, or hallway. AISI 316 contains extra molybdenum, making it more resistant to chloride and salt. As a result, 316 is the better choice for a bathroom with a lot of steam, a swimming pool environment, or a home on the coast. For most interior doors, 304 is more than sufficient.

If you are unsure which type you need, consider the location and humidity. If the hardware is installed on a standard interior door, AISI 304 is fine and cost-effective. If you use it in a damp room or near the sea, AISI 316 provides years of extra protection against deterioration. The price difference is small compared to the peace of mind in a challenging location. Our advisors are happy to help you make the right choice if you are unsure.

Why does a PVD coating stay beautiful for so long?

A PVD coating remains beautiful for so long because it applies an extremely hard and colorfast layer to the stainless steel. PVD stands for physical vapor deposition: in a vacuum chamber, metal particles 0.8 to 2 microns thick are deposited on the surface. This layer achieves a hardness of 4000 to 4500 HV, making it many times more scratch-resistant than ordinary coated or chrome-plated hardware. The color remains stable for 15 years or longer, even under the influence of sunlight. That is precisely why PVD is ideal for a front door or for doors that you touch very often.

Within our matte stainless steel collection, you will find PVD on models such as Olivari and Formani. The Olivari Diana on a rosette is finished in matte titanium PVD with high UV stability, while the Formani Gevereerd LB3-19 on a round rosette features a matte PVD coating on stainless steel. Thanks to this treatment, these versions are virtually maintenance-free. A damp microfiber cloth is enough to keep them looking pristine for years. For intensive use, such as in a rental property or a front door, matte stainless steel with PVD is the most worry-free choice.

What does EN1906 Class 3 mean?

EN1906 Class 3 means that a door handle can be opened and closed 200,000 times without wear occurring. EN1906 is the European standard for the durability of door handles, and the class indicates the number of cycles, or the number of times it is operated. Class 3 is intended for medium-intensity use, such as in a home or an office. The Formani LB3-19 from our collection meets this class, giving you certainty regarding its lifespan. The higher the class, the longer the hardware continues to function reliably.

For most homes, Class 3 is more than sufficient, as an interior door at home is not opened and closed nearly as often as in a public building. However, if you are installing hardware on a frequently used connecting door or in a home office, it is reassuring to know that it meets this standard. Solid versions from brands like Olivari and Formani last for years without problems due to their construction. This way, you invest not only in a beautiful appearance but also in hardware that will last a long time.

How do you measure matte stainless steel door hardware?

You measure matte stainless steel door hardware by looking at four dimensions: the spindle, the rosette size, the PC dimension, and the door thickness. The spindle is standard 8 mm square for an interior door and 7 mm for a window, so these are not interchangeable. The rosettes are usually round with a diameter of approximately 49 to 55 mm or square measuring 53 by 53 mm. The PC dimension, the distance between the center of the handle and the center of the cylinder, is 55 mm for interior doors and 72 to 92 mm for front doors. With these measurements, you can be sure that the hardware will fit.

Please also measure your door thickness, as this determines the required spindle length: allow 38 to 44 mm for interior doors and 38 to 65 mm for front doors. If you are replacing existing hardware, also take the drilling distance of the screw holes into account so that you do not have to drill again. With a new door, you have free choice and determine the placement yourself. For matching hinges in the same finish, take a look at our hinge.
