Square stainless steel key escutcheon. Corrosion-resistant escutcheon around the keyhole of lever doors

A square stainless steel key escutcheon covers the mortise opening of lever doors. These are classic interior door locks operated with a mortise key instead of a profile cylinder. The square shape complements modern minimalist door handles on square escutcheons and is a visually sleek choice for contemporary interiors. A key escutcheon is not a functional component but a cover element: it neatly covers the keyhole, protects the wood of the door from discoloration around the keyhole, and gives the door a finished look. AISI 304 stainless steel is corrosion-resistant and retains the same brushed finish for 30+ years without discoloration. At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find 18 square stainless steel key escutcheons from Intersteel, Impresso , and Olivari.

When do you choose the square version?

The square shape visually suits modern and minimalist interiors where straight lines and clean geometry take center stage. For door handles on square rosettes—most popular in new builds constructed after 2015—the square rosette is the logical match for visual consistency. In architect-designed homes where square geometry is implemented throughout the entire property (square toilet lock, square cylinder rosette, square door handle): the square rosette completes the package. For renovations where existing round rosettes are replaced with square ones: new drill holes usually need to be made because the drilling distance for square rosettes (typically 38 mm) differs from that of round rosettes (often 35-42 mm depending on the model). For classic villas with panel doors and ornamental details, the round rosette fits better than the square one. There, the round shape combines with classic proportions.

Dimensions and execution

Outer dimensions of 50×50 mm square are the Dutch standard. Fits existing drill holes of square rosettes in renovation applications. Drilling distance 38 mm centre-to-centre between the two mounting screws. Thickness 5–7 mm depending on version. Thinner for a sleek modern look, thicker for robust hotel and commercial applications. Keyhole shape Dutch mortise lock (BB key shape) for standard lever doors. Stainless steel quality AISI 304 for standard indoor climates, AISI 316 for coastal locations (rarely needed for interior keyhole rosettes). Fixing: M4 screws through both holes in the door. Countersunk head for a flush finish with the rosette surface.

Stainless steel square key escutcheon in your home

In modern new-builds with door handles on square rosettes: a square key rosette completes the visual package. All metal elements on the door in the same shape and finish. In architect-designed homes with a sleek, minimalist look: square rosettes are the logical choice over round or oval ones. In industrial lofts with steel interior doors: stainless steel fits the robust material palette and has the same appearance as the rest of the steel interior. In new-build apartments where the home has an average of 8-12 interior doors, each with a key rosette: choosing once and applying it consistently throughout the entire home is visually calmer than varying shapes. For renovations where existing round key rosettes are outdated: replacement with square stainless steel is a contemporary modernization.

Installation of stainless steel square key escutcheon

First, remove the old key escutcheon by unscrewing the screws on the door. Usually, there are two screws at the top and bottom of the escutcheon. Check if the drilling distance of the new escutcheon (38 mm center-to-center for a square) matches the existing drill holes in the door. If the drilling distance is different: fill the old holes with wooden plugs and glue, then mark the new holes and pre-drill with a Ø3 mm wood drill bit. Align the new escutcheon with the keyhole of the lock. Check that the key bit opening fits properly onto the existing lock mechanism. Manually tighten the M4 screws until the escutcheon sits firmly against the door. Do not overtighten to avoid stripping the threads. Test by inserting the key 5 times and operating the lock. The key should enter the lock without resistance.

Maintenance of stainless steel square key escutcheon

Clean once a month with a microfiber cloth and lukewarm water in the direction of the brush pattern. Avoid scouring pads, ammonia, acetone, and chlorine-based cleaners. These attack stainless steel and can eventually cause pitting. For fingerprints: use pH-neutral soap and rinse thoroughly, then wipe dry immediately. Rust on AISI 304 in a normal indoor climate is exceptional; clean immediately at the first signs to prevent corrosion spread. Lubricate the lock mechanism (not the rosette itself) once a year with graphite powder or special lock spray. Never use oil or grease (it sticks to dust).
