Window openers
Do you want to be able to leave your window slightly ajar for fresh air without the wind immediately slamming it shut? A window stay gives you exactly that control. This handy piece of window hardware holds your window in a fixed position, from a small crack to fully open, so you can ventilate undisturbed. Whether you want to safely air out the bedroom at night or keep the living room fresh during the day, with the right stay you determine how far your window opens. And if your window is on the ground floor, a lockable version keeps unwanted visitors out.
On this page, we explain what a window stay does and what types are available. You will read when you need a lockable version, which color matches your frame, and which size to choose. We also explain how to install and maintain a stay. This way, you know exactly what to look out for before ordering. Read on!
What exactly does a window opener do?
A window stay holds your window in one or more open positions, preventing the wind from pushing it further open or slamming it shut. You use it for controlled ventilation: a crack for a little fresh air, half-open for more, or fully open if you want to air out the room thoroughly. Additionally, the stay plays a role in safety; for ground-floor windows, a lockable version prevents the window from being pried open further. It is also pleasant for children, as the window remains neatly in a fixed position. This way, you combine fresh air with peace and safety.
In this collection, you will find window stays from trusted brands such as AXA and Dulimex, in all common designs. There are models for lightweight interior windows with no risk of burglary, and sturdy, certified versions for easily accessible windows. To complete your window setup, combine the stay with matching window hardware in the same color. Consider a matching window handle and a latch at the top of the frame. This ensures every window operates smoothly and the whole setup looks neat and tidy.
What types of window stays are there?
There are roughly three types of window stays: the classic bar stay, the swing-away stay, and the telescopic stay. The classic bar stay is a straight bar that you lock in one or more positions, ideal for interior windows with no risk of burglary. The swing-away stay, such as the AXA Flex or a Dulimex model, has a hinge mechanism that folds open smoothly and locks your window in virtually any angle. The telescopic stay, for example the AXA tele-stay in 30, 35, or 50 cm, has a few fixed click positions. Which type you choose depends on how you use the window.
For a window that you frequently switch between slightly ajar and half-open, a telescopic stay with click positions is convenient. If, however, you prefer stepless adjustment to any angle, a swivel stay is more comfortable. For heavy or wide window sashes and double frames, it is best to choose a certified model with reinforced mounting. For a tilt-and-turn window, mount the stay on the opposite side of the hinge point. When do you choose a lockable version?
You choose a lockable window stay whenever a window is easily accessible from the outside. Think of ground-floor windows, windows under a canopy, next to a shed or near a low balcony, and upper-floor windows that can be reached with a ladder or drainpipe. For these windows, the Police Security Mark for Safe Living prescribes a lockable version, and many insurers require it. A lockable stay prevents a burglar from pushing the window further open. For high, hard-to-reach windows, a standard version is usually sufficient.
Lockable window stays operate with a key or a push button. A key-operated version offers the highest level of burglary resistance and can often be made keyed alike, so that all your windows work with a single key. A push button is child-friendly and quicker to operate, which is convenient if you want to open the window quickly. When making your choice, look for the SKG certification: two stars represent approximately three minutes of resistance and form the minimum for the Police Quality Mark, while three stars offer about five minutes for villas and corner houses. Which color and finish suits your window frame?
Match the color and finish that suit your frame to the material and shade of the frame itself. For white uPVC or wooden frames, a white version in RAL 9010 Pure White is the most obvious choice, while RAL 9016 Traffic White is slightly cooler and complements sleek white architecture beautifully. For black frames or modern, sleekly designed windows, choose a matte black powder-coated stay. For aluminium frames, stainless steel is a timeless and strong option. And for classic homes with wooden frames, brass provides a warm, traditional look.
If you live by the coast or in a damp location, higher quality stainless steel, such as AISI 316, is a safe choice against corrosion. In such places, always use stainless steel screws as well, because galvanized screws rust more quickly. For a harmonious overall look, choose the stay in the same color as your window handle and other window hardware. This way, the style runs like a common thread through your home. If you are unsure between two shades, feel free to ask for advice.
What size window stay do you need?
You determine the size of window stay you need based on the size of your window and the drilling distance of the mounting. The rod length generally ranges from 200 to 500 mm: a shorter version for narrow sashes, such as in a bathroom or dormer, a longer one for standard windows, and an extra-long one for heavy, wide sashes or double frames. The screw size is usually M4 or M5. If you are replacing an existing stay, measure the distance between the drill holes so that the new one fits the same holes. This prevents extra drilling into your frame.
Also pay attention to the opening direction of your window, as this determines on which side the stay is positioned. For a tilt-and-turn window, you place the stay on the opposite side of the hinge point. If you are unsure which size or side you need, please send a photo of your window and frame along with a ruler to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl. Please indicate whether it concerns the ground floor or an upper floor, so that we can immediately recommend the correct quality mark. Our specialists will select the appropriate version for you.
How do you install and maintain a window stay?
You mount a window stay by screwing the base onto the frame and the stay part onto the rotating window profile. If you are replacing an old stay, first check that the size and side match, and place the new one in the same drill holes. For a new installation, first determine the position you use most often and maintain that position. Pre-drill the holes with a thin drill bit, approximately 3 mm for M4 or 4 mm for M5, to prevent the wood from splitting. Then tighten the screws by hand, as using a cordless drill will easily damage the threads.
After installation, test whether the stay clicks smoothly into the selected position without jamming by opening and closing the window a few times. For maintenance, wipe the stay with a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water approximately once a month. Avoid scouring pads, ammonia, acetone, and chlorine-based cleaners. Lubricate the stay shaft approximately once a year with a dry Teflon or silicone spray, and for a lockable version, lubricate the cylinder with a little graphite powder instead of oil. Near the coast, rinse the stay occasionally with fresh water to prevent salt deposits.
