Window lock
Does your window vibrate in the wind, leak when it rains, or can it be easily pried open from the outside? Then the window lock is likely worn out or incorrectly adjusted. The window lock is the mechanism that firmly locks your window in the frame: the locking hook rotates in the strike plate and pulls the sash securely against the profile. It is a small part, but it largely determines how well your window closes and how secure it is. Whether you are refurbishing a single window or tackling your entire home, with the right lock, every window will function smoothly and safely again.
On this page, we help you choose the right window lock. You will read exactly what a window lock does, the difference between a standard and a lockable version, and what the SKG quality marks mean. We also explain how to determine whether your window is left- or right-opening, the available sizes and colors, and how to install the lock. This way, you know exactly what to look for before ordering. Read on!
What exactly does a window lock do?
A window lock locks your window by rotating the locking hook in the strike plate, pulling the sash firmly against the frame. This keeps your window windproof, ensures a draft-free seal, and prevents it from being easily opened from the outside. You operate the hook with a crank or a pump handle, depending on the model. Without a properly functioning lock, the window vibrates in the wind and rain can leak along the profile. It is therefore the most important locking mechanism on casement windows, tilt-and-turn windows, and hopper windows.
You will find window locks for both classic 1930s homes with wooden frames and modern new-builds with uPVC or aluminium frames. At Deurbeslag Expert, we carry locks from AXA, including the 3302 and 3308 series, as well as from Intersteel and Dulimex, in standard and lockable versions. If you would like to view the matching window hardware immediately, our window hardware you. This allows you to put together a complete window package in one go.
Do you choose a standard or lockable window lock?
Whether you choose a standard or a lockable window lock depends on the accessibility of your window. A standard window lock has a mechanical hook without a lock and is sufficient for high-floor windows, an attic or dormer, and for interior windows where the risk of burglary is low. A lockable window lock additionally features a built-in lock with a cylinder or push button that locks the locking hook. As a result, a burglar cannot open the window from the outside, even after smashing the glass. This allows you to choose the right level of protection for each window.
For ground-floor windows and easily accessible upper-floor windows, a lockable version is mandatory according to the Police Security Mark for Safe Living, and most insurers require this. A window is considered accessible if someone can reach it without a ladder or heavy tools, for example via an extension, garage, or flat roof. For the corresponding handle types, please view our collection of lockable window handles. If you are unsure whether a window needs to be secured, it is better to choose the lockable variant. Our advisors are happy to assist you.
What do the SKG quality marks mean?
The SKG quality marks indicate how long a window lock withstands burglary tools. Two stars represent approximately three minutes of resistance and form the minimum for the Police Security Mark for Safe Living in new construction, for windows on the ground floor and accessible upper floors. Three stars offer about five minutes of resistance and are intended for villas, corner houses, and locations with a higher risk of burglary. The quality mark is independently tested, and the more stars, the longer it takes a burglar to break in. This allows you to choose the level that suits your situation.
When replacing locks in an existing home, it is wise to check your policy conditions, as some insurers accept locks without a quality mark provided your door is well secured, while others require a minimum of two stars across the board. For maximum burglary protection, combine a lockable window lock with multi-point locking on your window profile and optionally burglar-resistant glass. The price difference between two and three stars is small compared to the peace of mind it provides. If you live in a corner house or a detached home, three stars is a safe choice. Our specialists will be happy to advise you on the appropriate level.
Is your window left- or right-opening?
You determine whether your window is left- or right-opening by viewing the window from the outside and looking at the hinge side. If the hinge is on the left, you need a right-opening lock where the hook rotates towards the right frame stile; if the hinge is on the right, choose a left-opening lock. This is crucial when replacing a window, as a lock that rotates incorrectly will not fit without modifying the frame. If you have two windows side by side, you often need one left and one right version. Therefore, measure this carefully before ordering.
When replacing, also pay attention to the cam height, the height at which the locking hook engages with the strike plate; this must match your existing strike plate. If the cam height is incorrect, it is best to replace the lock and the strike plate together. If you are unsure about the opening direction, send a photo of your opened window with the hinge visible to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl. Our advisors will then determine which type fits. This way, you get it right the first time.
What sizes and colors are available?
When installing a window lock, pay particular attention to the drilling distance, the spindle height, and the spindle. The drilling distance between the mounting screws is typically 38, 43, or 50 mm center-to-center, depending on the brand and year of manufacture. The spindle on a handle-operated lock is 7 mm square, the standard for windows, and is therefore thinner than the 8 mm spindle of door handles. When replacing a lock, always measure your old lock so that the new one fits into the same holes immediately. This prevents extra drilling in your frame.
In terms of color, choose the finish that matches your frame. For white uPVC or wooden frames, a white version in RAL 9010 or 9016 is the most understated, while matte black provides a beautiful contrast with sleek, modern frames. For aluminium or industrial frames, stainless steel in grade 304 is a safe choice for interiors or 316 for coastal locations, while brass and bronze suit a classic home. Preferably, match the lock to your window handles and other hardware for a harmonious overall look. If you are unsure about the color, our advisors are happy to help.
How do you install and maintain a window lock?
To install a window latch, unscrew the old latch when replacing it and place the new one in the same holes, after checking that the direction of rotation and the cam height are correct. For a new installation, use a template and pre-drill with a 3 mm drill bit for M4 screws or 4 mm for M5 screws to prevent the wood from splitting, especially with hardwood. Tighten the supplied screws and hold the final turns by hand, as a cordless drill can damage the threads. Then test opening and closing ten times; the hook should fall smoothly into the socket without jamming.
For maintenance, wipe the lock with a damp microfiber cloth and lukewarm water approximately once a month, avoiding scouring pads and harsh agents such as ammonia and acetone. In coastal locations, rinse the lock monthly with fresh water to prevent salt buildup. Lubricate the mechanism once a year with a dry Teflon or silicone spray, and for lockable versions, lubricate the cylinder with some graphite powder. Do not use oil or penetrating oil, as these attract dust and eventually leave a dirty film. This will ensure your window lock continues to operate smoothly for years.
