Buying window hardware for your home?

Window hardware is the collective term for all components used to open, close, lock, and secure your window in the open position. A good system combines operation (window handle), locking (lock + strike plate), open-position locking (stay), child safety (sealant stay), and burglary resistance (SKG**® or SKG***®). The 7 mm square spindle is the Dutch window standard. Not 8 mm like door handles (the most common DIY mistake). SKG**® (3 min resistance) is the PKVW minimum for ground floors; SKG***® (5 min) for villas and corner houses. Main types: casement window (1930s, toilet/bathroom), tilt-and-turn (Dutch standard for new construction from 1990), hopper window (dormer), French doors (with window espagnolette). Color matching frame: RAL 9010/9016 white, matte black, stainless steel AISI 304/316, brass, chrome, nickel, gold with PVD. From AXA, Intersteel, Dulimex, Olivari, and Formani. Order before 8:00 PM? Your window hardware will be on your doorstep the next working day, provided the product is in stock. Unsure about the window type, spindle, color, or SKG level? Send a photo of your window to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl. We are happy to help.

Are you looking for new window hardware? Whether you are replacing a single window handle or re-fitting an entire window, the right hardware determines how smoothly your window opens, how well it closes, and how secure your home is. On this page, you can read about the components that make up a complete window and what to look for when making your choice.

At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find window hardware from trusted brands such as AXA, Intersteel, Dulimex, Olivari, and Formani, for casement windows, tilt-and-turn windows, hopper windows, and double patio doors. Read on to discover which hardware suits your windows!

What parts does a complete window have?

A functional window typically has four components: a window handle for operation, a window latch with a locking hook that engages with the strike plate, a window stay to secure the window in an open position, and small accessories such as strike plates and stay plates. Together, these ensure that your window rotates smoothly, closes properly, and can remain slightly ajar.

For wide windows or double patio doors, an espagnolet is often added, which locks at multiple points simultaneously. Do you want to replace a specific part? Then take a look at our separate collections of window handles, window latches , and window stays.

What burglary protection do you need?

For easily accessible windows, such as those on the ground floor or near a flat roof, we always recommend a lockable version with the SKG quality mark. Two stars (SKG**) represents approximately three minutes of resistance to burglary tools and is the standard within the Police Quality Mark for Safe Living; three stars offer even greater resistance.

For high floors, attics, or dormers with low risk, a standard version without a lock is often sufficient. Do you want to properly secure your entire home? Then combine your window hardware with matching security hardware on your doors.

How do you determine the correct direction of rotation?

You determine the direction of rotation by standing in front of the window from the inside and observing which way the window swings open and where the hinges are located. This is because much window hardware is designed to open to the left or right, and an incorrect choice means that the locking hook does not engage properly with the strike plate.

Unsure? Take a photo of your window in the open position and pay close attention to the hinge side. For tilt-and-turn windows, also check whether the hardware is suitable for both the turning and tilting functions.

How do you choose the right size?

When it comes to window handles, pay attention to the spindle, which is usually 7 mm square on windows, and to the distance between the drill holes on locks. If you are replacing existing hardware, it is wise to measure the old parts or take them along so that the new ones fit the same holes.

This way, you avoid having to drill extra holes or a part not quite fitting. Can't figure it out? Feel free to send us a photo with the dimensions; we are happy to help you find a suitable replacement.

How do you keep your window hardware running smoothly?

You keep window hardware running smoothly by cleaning the moving parts a few times a year and lightly lubricating them with a suitable lubricant. Dirt and dust in the mechanism eventually cause stiff rotation and unnecessary wear.

Clean the visible parts with a soft, damp cloth and avoid harsh cleaning agents that could damage the finish. With that little bit of maintenance, your window hardware will last smoothly for years.
