Do you have a classic door, a French door, or a wide window that you want to securely lock at multiple points? Then an espagnolet is exactly what you are looking for. This vertical rod mechanism locks your door or window not at one, but at two or three points simultaneously, giving wind, rain, and burglars much less of a chance. Whether you are preserving a historic monumental home or finishing a modern new build with large windows, with the right espagnolet you combine a sturdy lock with an attractive appearance.

On this page, we will calmly explain exactly what an espagnolet is and the difference between door, handle, and pump versions. You will learn which rod length to measure, when to choose a lockable version, and which finish suits your door. We also explain what to look out for during installation. This way, you can choose the right espagnolet for your situation with confidence. Read on!

What exactly is an espagnolet?

An espagnolette is a mechanical locking system consisting of a handle or pump lever on the visible side and continuous rods that engage with strike plates at the top and bottom. The result is a door or window that is locked at multiple points simultaneously: at the top, in the middle at the lock, and at the bottom. This ensures that the sash is pulled evenly into the frame and remains securely closed, even in wind and rain. This is a proven system for a classic door, a barn door, a patio door, or a wide window.

At Deurbeslag Expert, we carry espagnolets from brands including Intersteel, Mi Satori, Hardbrass, and DX, with both lever and pump operation. You will find versions for doors and windows, both standard and lockable. Which one you need depends on the sash type, height, and desired appearance. If you are specifically looking for a version for your window, please browse our collection of window espagnolets.

What is the difference between a door espagnolette, a handle espagnolette, and a pump espagnolette?

The difference between a door espagnolette, handle espagnolette, and pump espagnolette lies in the operation and the application. A door espagnolette, such as the 2200 mm Intersteel lockable version, is intended for solid doors and features an integrated cylinder that locks it with a key. A handle espagnolette is operated with a standard handle and is available in shapes such as 90-degree angle, straight T-shaped, and straight L-shaped, ideal for those who want modern, quick operation without key locking. Which one you choose depends on the function of the door and your desire for extra security.

A pump espagnolette works with a vertical pump lever that you move up and down to operate the rods, such as the Intersteel Ton Basic and the Mi Satori Eton and Cambridge. This classic mechanism suits a country house, a listed building, or an antique door beautifully. If you only want to view the handle versions, take a look at our collection of lever espagnolettes. If you are undecided between a handle and a pump, the style of your home will primarily determine the most beautiful choice.

What bar length do you need?

The rod length you need is determined by the height of your door or window. For a standard door height of around 2100 mm, a rod set of 2 x 1245 mm or 2 x 1250 mm works, which is included with many Intersteel models. For an extra-high door of around 2300 mm or more, choose a longer set, for example the 1500 mm version from Hardbrass Mariani. The DX espagnolette lock with SKG certification is even adjustable from 530 to 2500 mm, handy for custom work.

If you are replacing an existing espagnolette, first measure the exact height between the top and bottom locking plates so that the new rods align precisely. Additionally, pay attention to the spindle, which is 7 or 8 mm square in these versions, and to the hand side: left- or right-handed depends on the hinge side of your door. For a double patio door, install the espagnolette on the fixed leaf that does not have the sliding function. If you are unsure about the size, send a photo with a ruler to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl.

When do you choose a lockable espagnolet?

You choose a lockable espagnolette whenever the door or window is easily accessible from the outside and you desire burglary protection. A lockable version features an integrated cylinder or push button that locks the operating position, preventing a burglar from turning the handle without a key and ensuring the entire rod remains locked. According to the Police Security Mark for Safe Living, this is even mandatory for ground-floor patio doors and easily accessible windows. For high upper-floor windows with a minimal risk of burglary, a non-lockable version suffices.

A lockable espagnolette is therefore a sensible choice for anyone who wants to properly secure their entrance or garden door and meet the requirements of their insurer. Many Intersteel models feature an interchangeable cylinder, allowing you to upgrade to an SKG cylinder later without replacing the entire espagnolette. Combine the espagnolette for your front door with matching security hardware and a high-quality cylinder. This way, you not only make your door securely closed but also burglar-resistant.

Which finish suits your door or villa?

You choose the finish that suits your door or villa by matching the shade to your door and other hardware. Brushed stainless steel, seen on the Intersteel espagnolette handle in 90-degree, straight T-, and straight L-shaped versions, looks great on a modern villa with a stainless steel package. Matte black, found in Mi Satori, Hardbrass Mariani, and the DX SKG version among others, complements a contemporary home. White in RAL 9010 is the logical choice for white doors and residential projects, while aluminium provides an industrial look.

For a classic country house, warmer tones are more beautiful: the Intersteel Ton Basic espagnolette is available in matte nickel with ebony and in lacquered brass with ebony, which pairs beautifully with a brass or nickel package. For a harmonious overall look, maintain the same finish for your espagnolette, window handles , and other window hardware. This way, the style runs like a common thread through your home. If you are unsure between two shades, our advisors will be happy to help you decide.

How do you install an espagnolet?

An espagnolette lock requires more precision than a standard lock, because the rods must run at the correct height and the top and bottom locking mechanisms must align exactly with the strike plates in the frame. First, measure the height between the top and bottom locking plates and select or order a rod of the correct length. Next, mill the recesses for the rod in the profile and mount the strike plates on the frame at the level of the rod ends. Work slowly and measure carefully, as the alignment largely determines whether the door will close properly.

Test after installation by opening and closing the door or window about ten times. All locking points must engage and release simultaneously, without any rod jamming. For a lockable version, also check that the cylinder turns smoothly before permanently securing everything. If you have any doubts about the installation or milling work, call in a professional, as an incorrectly installed espagnolet results in a poorly closing door with drafts or leaks. Our specialists are happy to provide you with advice beforehand.
