Buy a swivel knob handle for a minimalist interior door

A rotary knob handle is a hybrid between a traditional handle and a fixed knob. Visually, it looks like a knob, but functionally it works like a handle. Turning it operates the lock, while the round shape makes the interior door visually less dominant than a protruding lever. On this page, you will find all the models we carry, along with advice on when to choose a knob handle and which shape suits which interior.

Do you want to give your interior doors a calm, minimalist look without a protruding handle tapping against everything? Then a rotating knob handle is a great choice. This round knob operates your lock as usual, but takes up less visual space than a long handle, resulting in a sleek and understated appearance. This is a pleasant and elegant detail, especially in narrow hallways, dining rooms, and minimalist interiors. This way, you let the door itself define the look, while the knob discreetly does its job.

On this page, we explain exactly what a swivel knob stool is and how it differs from a fixed knob. You will read about the models and brands we carry, the available colors, the measurements to take, and when a knob is more comfortable to use than a standard stool. This way, you know exactly what to look for before ordering. Read on!

What is the difference between a rotary knob handle and a fixed knob?

The difference between a rotating knob handle and a fixed knob lies entirely in the operation of the lock. A rotating knob handle rotates on its axis when turned, causing the pin in the lock to rotate along with it and the bolt to retract, so that the door opens. It is exactly the same mechanism as a standard handle, only in a round shape instead of a long grip. A fixed knob, on the other hand, remains stationary and serves only as a handle to pull the door towards you, without operating the lock. The difference therefore determines whether or not you can use the knob to open the door. A fixed variant can be found, for example, as a doorknob on an escutcheon.

For interior doors with a standard mortise lock, a rotating knob handle is the right choice, as you want to be able to operate the lock. For pedestrian doors without a lock, or for the exterior of a front door where you specifically do not want to operate the lock, choose a fixed knob. Which one you need therefore depends on what is behind the door: a lock or not. If you are unsure, measure your existing hardware or send us a photo. For the fixed variants, also view our collection of door knobs. Consider, for example, the fixed door knob on a rosette.

Which models and shapes can you choose?

You can choose from a wide range of shapes, each with its own atmosphere. The Intersteel collection includes the Droplet, a classic model that flares slightly outwards and suits classic villas and 1930s homes beautifully, and the Mushroom, which is thicker and rounder with a stately home character. The Glad is a neutral, oval knob for modern interiors, while the Freesrand has a slightly protruding edge for extra grip and detailing. For a Scandinavian or natural interior, there is the Beechwood, featuring natural wood combined with a metal rosette. Thus, there is a suitable model for virtually every interior style.

In addition to Intersteel, we carry an Italian line from Aprile with models such as the Ruta, Tuja, Mora, Ortica, and Querca. The Ruta has a slightly oval silhouette, while the Tuja is rounded and smoother; for the sleekest, minimalist design, choose the Tuja in matte black or matte copper PVD. From the Swedish brand Hafi, there is the Private Line, featuring Model 280, among others—a flat, round knob on a rosette that looks stunning in a modern Scandinavian interior. Whichever model you choose, match it to the style of your door and your interior. Our advisors are happy to help you.

Which colors are available?

Knob handles are available in virtually every common metal color and finish. Matte black is the best-selling color and suits modern homes and industrial interiors beautifully, while brushed stainless steel is a neutral, timeless choice for sleek new builds and offices. Matte copper PVD adds warmth to a white or dark wooden door, while matte nickel and polished nickel look particularly good in classic and historic homes. White is a great choice for a Scandinavian interior or uPVC interior doors. This way, you can find a suitable shade for every style.

For those who love natural materials, there are also wooden versions, such as the Beechwood and the dark stained Beechwood Black. If you want to furnish your entire home consistently in one color, it is best to match the knob handles to your other door handles and rosettes in the same finish. This way, the style runs like a common thread through your house. If you are unsure between two shades, order one model first to calmly see how the color looks on your doors. For a complete picture, also view our collection of rosettes.

What measurements do you need for a knob handle?

For a knob handle, pay particular attention to the diameter of the knob, the size of the rosette, and the spindle. The diameter of a standard knob handle ranges between 50 and 65 millimeters, with most models being around 52 to 55 millimeters. The rosette underneath is usually round with a diameter of approximately 49 to 55 millimeters, or square at 53 by 53 millimeters for the so-called Kvadrat versions. These sizes fit almost every standard Dutch interior door. The rosette generously covers the existing recess for the spindle, typically 16 to 20 millimeters.

The spindle for interior doors is standard 8 millimeters square, and all knob handles from Intersteel and Aprile are matched to this size. If you are unsure, measure your existing spindle or send a photo with a ruler attached. Especially in older homes, the spindle may deviate, for example by 5 or 6 millimeters for some interior doors or 7 millimeters for window handles. Ordering the correct type of spindle is then just as important as the knob handle itself. Our specialists will be happy to help you determine the correct size.

When do you choose a knob stool instead of a regular stool?

You choose a knob handle instead of a standard handle when you want to take up minimal visual space and are seeking a calm look. A knob does not protrude to the side, but only forward, which is convenient in narrow hallways or on a dining room door you walk past often and do not want to constantly bump into a protruding handle. Also in a minimalist interior, where you want the door itself to define the design, a knob works better than a prominent handle. The knob remains discreet and purely functional. This keeps the look sleek and uncluttered.

For ergonomics, the choice depends on your grip. People with large hands or curved fingers sometimes find a handle easier because they can rest their whole hand on it, while children and the elderly often prefer a knob due to the intuitive movement of grasping and turning. When installing a new interior door, feel free to try both to see which works best. If you don't have time to stop by, order a few models, install them temporarily, and return whatever you don't like within thirty days. That way, you can choose the version that feels most comfortable with peace of mind.
