Unlacquered Brass Door Handles
Do you love doors with character and want hardware that changes with your home rather than always staying the same? Then unlacquered brass door handles are exactly what you are looking for. These door handles, also known as door knobs in Dutch, are made of solid brass without a protective lacquer layer. As a result, they develop a warm, natural patina over the years that gives your door an authentic, aged look. This comes into its own particularly beautifully in a 1930s home or a monumental mansion.
On this page, we will calmly explain exactly what unlacquered brass is and why people consciously choose it. You will read about how the patina develops and how to maintain it, the difference between a rosette and a backplate version, which brands we carry, and which measurements to take. This way, you can choose with peace of mind the handle that suits your doors and the atmosphere you have in mind. Read on!
What exactly are unlacquered brass door handles?
Unlacquered brass door handles are solid brass doorknobs that have deliberately not been coated with lacquer. In Dutch, the word 'door handle' is simply a synonym for 'door knob': the elongated handle that you press down to retract the bolt and open the door. Because there is no protective lacquer on it, the brass is in direct contact with the air and your hands, causing it to slowly change color. This natural discoloration, the patina, is precisely what makes unlacquered brass so popular. So you don't get a fixed color, but hardware that grows with your home.
In this comprehensive collection, we bring together all unlacquered brass versions, both on rosette and backplate. Whether you are looking for a sleek modern handle or a classic model for a panel door, you will find the version that suits your door here. Why choose unlacquered brass?
You choose unlacquered brass when you appreciate that living, changing appearance and are not looking for a fixed, permanently shiny color. Unlacquered brass starts out clear and golden and develops over the years a warm, brown to bronze-like glow that cannot be replicated. Lacquered brass, on the other hand, has a transparent lacquer coating and remains stable and shiny for five to ten years without patinating. A version with titanium PVD even retains the exact same color for fifteen years or longer. The difference, therefore, lies purely in whether you want the fittings to evolve or not.
For an authentic 1930s home or a listed building, unlacquered brass is often the right choice, as the patina complements old materials and warm tones beautifully. If you want the fittings to remain as they were on the first day, you are better off choosing lacquered brass or titanium PVD. It is therefore primarily a matter of taste and the atmosphere you envision. If in doubt, consider whether you view the change as charm or as wear. If you find it charming, unlacquered brass is a beautiful, characterful choice.
How does the patina develop and how do you maintain it?
The patina develops in recognizable stages, from bright gold to an increasingly warmer, deeper shade. In the first year, the handle is still bright gold; subsequently, it turns golden brown in one to two years, warm brown in two to five years, and eventually a deep bronze. How quickly this happens depends on the amount of light, the humidity, and how often you touch the handle. A handle by a window exposed to the sun patinas faster than one in a dark hallway. In this way, every door in the house acquires its own unique shade over time.
If you want to keep the brass bright and golden, polish it approximately once every two to three months with a brass polish such as Brasso. If you prefer to let the patina develop naturally, wiping it occasionally with a damp microfiber cloth will suffice. In both cases, avoid ammonia, acetone, vinegar, and scouring pads, as these cause uneven discoloration or damage the surface. This way, you decide for yourself how much the handle blends in with your home. It is a little attention for a truly unique look.
Do you choose a version on a rosette or on a shield?
Whether you choose a rosette or backplate version depends on the style of your door. A door handle on a rosette sits on two small, separate rosettes—one around the handle and one around the keyhole or cylinder—and looks compact and modern. A door handle on a backplate sits on a single elongated plate of approximately 220 to 260 mm that covers both the handle and the lock, and has a more classic appearance. The rosette version pairs well with modern interior doors, while a backplate looks particularly good on a classic panel door with a lever lock. Both are available in unlacquered brass.
For a harmonious overall look, it is best to consistently choose either a rosette or a backplate within a single home, rather than mixing them. A modern renovation lends itself well to the compact rosette version, while an authentic 1930s home often looks better with a backplate. If in doubt, look at your existing doors: if they currently have a long panel, a backplate is the obvious choice. This ensures the new hardware aligns neatly with what you already have. The choice is primarily aesthetic, as both function the same way.
Which brands can you find in unlacquered brass?
In unlacquered brass, you will find four brands, each representing its own style and price range. Intersteel represents the accessible Dutch mid-segment, with classic models such as the Ton series with its conical handle and the sleeker Trento and Banaan. Aprile is a Polish-Italian brand with a modern design language, known for series such as Kalmia, Fragola, and Tuja. Olivari is the Italian premium brand with sleek and organic models such as Lama, Onda, and Euclide. Thus, there is a suitable handle for every taste and budget.
In addition, we carry Hardbrass Mariani, Italian craftsmanship via a Dutch importer, ideal if you wish to complement a broader Hardbrass range. A simple rule of thumb helps with the choice: for a classic 1930s home, the Intersteel Ton series is the most common choice; for a modern look, look at Aprile; and for a truly luxurious property, look at Olivari. If you would like to compare more broadly with other brass tones and finishes, view our collection of brass door hardware. If you are undecided between two brands, our specialists will be happy to assist you.
Which sizes do you need?
The measurements you need for a brass door handle are the spindle, the drilling distance, and the spindle length. For an interior door, the spindle is standard 8 mm square, the Dutch standard, whereas a window handle has a thinner spindle of 7 mm. The drilling distance between the screw holes is typically 38 mm center to center. The spindle is usually 35 mm long, suitable for an interior door 38 to 45 mm thick. With these measurements, you can be sure that the handle will fit your door.
Additionally, pay attention to the handle length and, depending on your choice, the rosette or backplate size. On most models, the handle is 110 to 130 mm long, a rosette is round Ø50 to 53 mm or square 50 by 50 mm, and a backplate measures approximately 220 to 260 by 40 to 50 mm. If you are replacing existing hardware, measure your old situation and choose the same dimensions so you do not have to drill again. For matching hinges in the same style, take a look at our hinge.
