Project slots
Are you responsible for the doors in an office, school, healthcare facility, or hotel, and are you looking for locks that keep working day in, day out? Then you will quickly find yourself considering project locks. These are heavy-duty mortise locks designed for intensive use in public spaces, where doors open and close hundreds of times a day. Where a standard residential lock would eventually fail, a project lock continues to turn smoothly, even after opening and closing hundreds of thousands of times. This way, you keep the doors in your building reliably operational for years.
On this page, we explain what distinguishes a project lock from a standard lock and what versions are available. You will read about the difference between a mechanical lock and a magnetic lock, what the KL3 class and fire classes mean, and which measurements to take. We also explain how to request project quotes and advice. This way, you can choose the right lock for your project with confidence. Read on!
What distinguishes a project lock from a standard lock?
A project lock distinguishes itself from a standard residential lock by its lifespan, materials, and certification. While a residential lock is typically tested for around 30,000 to 50,000 opening cycles, a project lock is designed for 100,000 cycles or more, and in hotels and hospitals, even 200,000 or more. The construction is made of stainless steel instead of zinc, with reinforced bolts that can withstand heavy use. As a result, a project lock continues to function reliably in places where many people pass through daily. It is therefore truly built for the heaviest loads.
At Deurbeslag Expert, we carry 28 project locks from Artitec, in heavy-duty mechanical versions and silent magnetic locks. You will find day and night locks, latch locks, toilet locks, and central locks, suitable for a wide variety of doors in a building. Many versions are available with KL3 certification according to EN 12209 and with fire resistance. For the corresponding cylinders, please view our cylinder. This allows you to put together a suitable combination for each door.
Do you choose a mechanical lock or a magnetic lock?
Whether you choose a mechanical lock or a magnetic lock depends on the space and your specific requirements. A mechanical project lock, such as a day and night lock, a fire-resistant latch lock, or a central lock, is heavy-duty, featuring a hardened bolt and a reinforced cylinder bushing. It is the preferred choice for schools, hospitals, and industrial locations where hundreds of people pass through the doors daily. For these locations, the mechanical lock is often combined with fire resistance. This ensures both functionality and safety are maintained.
A magnetic lock works with a magnetic bolt that holds the door closed by attraction, without the clicking sound of a conventional lock. This makes it ideal for meeting rooms, office partitions, and hotel rooms, where noise disturbance is undesirable. Furthermore, because the bolt does not press mechanically against the strike plate, there is hardly any wear on the bolt mechanism. For offices and hotels where silence is paramount, a magnetic lock is therefore the more pleasant choice. If you are unsure whether to choose a mechanical or magnetic lock, our specialists would be happy to help you decide.
What do KL3 and fire classes BD30, BD60, and BD90 mean?
KL3 means that a lock is classified in the heaviest load class of the European standard EN 12209 for mortise locks. This class represents the highest mechanical load and is the common standard for commercial locks in public buildings. The fire classes BD30, BD60, and BD90 indicate how long a lock retains its function in the event of a fire: 30, 60, or 90 minutes, respectively. This fire resistance is important in areas where fire compartmentation is legally required, such as escape routes and corridors. This way, you combine a long service life with proper fire safety.
The combination you need depends on the type of building and the function of the door. For offices and schools, fire resistance in escape routes is often a minimum requirement, while hospitals typically require a higher fire rating. Please note that a lock does not automatically hold both certificates; therefore, check the label for each product. Additionally, you can look for the SKG quality mark for burglary resistance. If you are unsure which class applies to your project, please present your situation to us, and our specialists will provide targeted advice.
What dimensions do you need for a project lock?
For a project lock, pay particular attention to the backset, the PC dimension, the faceplate, and the spindle. The backset, the distance from the front of the lock to the center of the spindle, is typically 50, 55, or 60 mm, with 55 mm being common for interior doors and 60 mm for heavy intermediate doors. The PC dimension is usually 55 mm for cylinder latch locks and 72 mm for deadbolts, while bathroom and toilet locks adhere to the WC dimension of 78 mm. The spindle is 8 mm square, the standard for door handles. With these dimensions, you can be sure that the lock will fit in your door.
The faceplate of a project lock is typically 24 x 180 mm or 28 x 180 mm, with a rounded or straight shape, depending on your frame recess. If you are replacing existing locks, first measure your current situation so that the new locks fit into the same milled opening. For matching handles, please look at our collection of door handles , and for heavy-duty hardware, at our collection of ball bearing hinges. If you are unsure about the correct size, please send your door specifications to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl, and our advisors will assist you.
For which buildings do you choose project slots?
You choose project locks for every building where doors are used intensively and where reliability and fire safety are paramount. In office buildings, you install day and night locks on office doors, magnetic locks on meeting rooms, and fire-resistant locks in escape routes. In schools and universities, you choose heavy-duty mechanical locks for classrooms and fire-resistant versions for stairwells and corridors. This way, you tailor the lock to the function and requirements of each room. As a result, the entire building remains safe and fully functional.
Hotels, hospitals, and sports facilities also each have their own specific requirements. In hotels, magnetic locks ensure silent operation in the rooms, while hospitals often request fire-resistant locks for compartment doors with a hygienic stainless steel finish that can withstand intensive cleaning. In fitness and sports locations, heavy-duty stainless steel locks are resistant to moisture and daily cleaning. For the toilet and bathroom doors in these buildings, take a look at our collection of bathroom and toilet locks. Our specialists are happy to help you choose the right option for each room.
How do you request project quotes and advice?
You can request project pricing by submitting your project to us starting from approximately ten locks. For contractors, construction companies, and project developers, we work with personalized quotes, including a delivery schedule tailored to your project phasing. This way, you know exactly what to expect in terms of price and delivery beforehand. This makes procurement for a large project straightforward.
To request a quote, please send the relevant project information to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl, such as the building type, door specifications, and desired certification—e.g., SKG or a fire class like BD30, BD60, or BD90. For custom versions, such as a specific color, certification, or keyed-alike cylinders, a delivery time of two to four weeks generally applies. For large quantities, please also provide your desired delivery date so we can adjust the schedule accordingly. If you are unsure between mechanical and magnetic locks, or about the correct class, our specialists will be happy to advise you. This ensures you make the right choice for your project.
