Old Grey Door Handles on Backplate
Antique grey backplate door handles are interior door handles mounted on a long, narrow metal backplate that extends from the hinge axis to below the lock. This allows both the handle rosette and the lock mortise (or cylinder mortise) to visually disappear under a single backplate for a stately, classic appearance. Common in monumental homes, classic villas, and renovation projects where modern functionality is combined with authentic door hardware. The antique grey patinated finish creates the look of decades-old cast iron fittings with natural colour variation between light grey and dark grey. At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find 4 antique grey backplate door handles from Intersteel 's Helena design series. A classic door handle shape with a profiled grip and rounded ends.
The Intersteel Helena design series
Helena is an Intersteel design series with a classic door handle shape: a slightly curved grip, profiled detailing at the grip ends, and a soft transition from grip to rosette. It suits four interior styles: monumental canal houses with panel interior doors, classic villas with oak interior doors, 1930s homes retaining original detailing, and farmhouse conversions with wooden ceiling beams and authentic floors. The Helena shape distinguishes itself from modern, sleek door handles (straight grip, sharp angles) through its organic lines that evoke the look of classic cast iron craftsmanship, while the material and construction are modern for a lifespan of 20+ years.
Four variants for different door functions
The Helena on backplate in antique grey is available in four lock variants. Choose the correct one based on the lock in your interior door. Blind. Backplate without key cut-out or cylinder hole, for interior doors without a lock (living room-to-hallway, bedroom without a key). Suitable for doors where only the handle holds the door shut via a latch. WC 63/8 mm. Backplate with WC latch cut-out, for toilet and bathroom doors with a WC lock. The 63 mm is the distance between the handle spindle and the WC latch; 8 mm is the spindle diameter of the WC latch knob. Profile cylinder 55 mm (PC55). Backplate with profile cylinder hole 55 mm below the handle spindle. For interior doors with a cylinder lock where you can lock the door with a key. Common in study, office, or storage rooms. Keyhole 56 mm. Backplate with classic key cut-out 56 mm below the handle spindle. For interior doors with old lever locks (1900-1960) where a mortise key is used. Common for monumental interior doors where the old lock is deliberately preserved.
Which variant fits which door?
A simple decision sequence. No lock visible in the existing door → flush lock. Toilet or bathroom door with WC latch (red/white pictogram on the outside) → WC 63/8 mm. Interior door with cylinder (egg-shaped cylinder visible under the handle) → PC55. Monumental interior door with key recess for a mortise key (vertical rectangular opening) → keyhole 56 mm. If in doubt: measure the distance between the center of the handle spindle and the center of the lock hole. 55 mm → PC, 56 mm → keyhole (a 1 mm difference is practically identical but deliberately differentiated for matching), 63 mm → WC. For replacing existing hardware: choose the variant that matches the existing lock without replacing the lock itself.
Why old grey on the shield specifically?
The combination of an antique grey finish and a long escutcheon creates a specific look suitable for four scenarios. A monumental building with wooden panel interior doors where the long escutcheon shape emphasizes the height of the panel edge and the patinated finish does not clash with other authentic hardware (letter plates, key escutcheons). A classic villa with thick oak interior doors where the escutcheon has a stately presence against the wood. A farmhouse conversion with a beamed ceiling and authentic floors. Antique grey complements other natural materials. A renovation that preserves character, where you want modern, functional hardware without making it visually modern. Not suitable for: modern, sleek white interiors (choose brushed stainless steel or matte black instead), industrial conversions (matte black RAL 9005 for a rugged look), or light Scandinavian interiors (white RAL 9010 or bright stainless steel).
Sizing and compatibility
For correct installation. Escutcheon dimensions: 195-240 mm long, 40-55 mm wide. Fits standard 35-45 mm thick interior doors with classic profiles. Handle length: 120-140 mm measured from handle spindle to handle end, ergonomic for a full palm grip. Square spindle: 8 mm (standard Dutch interior door), fits into 8 mm square hole in lock mechanism. Drilling distance in the escutcheon: 50-55 mm center-to-center between top and bottom screw holes. Screw type: supplied wood screws with chamfered head for countersunk mounting in the escutcheon. For replacement of existing escutcheon: measure the existing drilling distance before ordering. Some old monumental doors have a 38 mm center-to-center distance instead of 50 mm.
Combine with classic door hardware
For the complete classic package. Old grey door handles on rosette subcategory for interior doors where you prefer short rosettes to backplates. Matches round key rosettes on the door. Old grey door handles as synonym hub. Old grey doorknob for interior doors where you want a fixed knob on the non-handling side (typically bedroom exterior). Old grey security rosette for the front door. Antique door hardware hub for the complete classic package. For matching cylinders with PC55 variant: cylinders hub with Pfaffenhain and other premium brands. For matching mortise locks: mortise locks. For monumental design with brass or bronze as a warmer alternative: brass door hardware, bronze door hardware.
Assembly
Four-step procedure. 1. Preparation: Measure the existing drilling distance on the door (typically 50-55 mm center-to-center) with a digital caliper. Verify that the Helena escutcheon matches this measurement. For new installation: use a template (often supplied by the manufacturer) to correctly mark the screw holes. 2. Drilling: Pre-drill with a Ø 2.5-3 mm drill bit for the screws to prevent cracking in the wooden frame component. For PC55 or keyhole 56: the center hole for the cylinder or lock spindle must already be present in the door. 3. Spindle: Slide the 8-mm square spindle through the spindle into the lock mechanism on the opposite side. For a through-door (handle on both sides): the spindle must be long enough for the entire door thickness plus both spindles. 4. Screwing: Screw the escutcheon in place on both sides; check that the handle turns smoothly and the spindle passes through the lock spindle without resistance. If stiff: slightly adjust door axle position.
Maintenance
Clean once a month with a dry or slightly damp microfiber cloth. The patinated layer is part of the aesthetics and should not be polished away. Avoid scouring pads, ammonia, acetone, and acidic cleaners. These damage the patina coating and can cause areas to turn bright gray instead of weathered gray. Avoid metal polish paste, which can restore the patinated finish to the original metal. Lubricate the crank pin and crank shaft once a year with dry Teflon or silicone spray (not oil or WD-40, which attract dust). Check once a year that the screws are still securely tightened. Screws may loosen with intensive daily opening and closing. For ebony handle versions (some Helena models): rub with furniture oil or beeswax once a year.
