Matte Nickel Door Handles

Matte nickel door handles is the Dutch synonym category for matte nickel door knobs. Both words refer to the elongated handle that you push down to retract the bolt in an interior door. The term 'klink' comes from classical Dutch for 'klinkstang' (the mechanical arm in the lock). At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find models in this collection category from 4 brands: Intersteel (Ton Basic, George, Bjorn, Phobos, Sigaar, Sophie), Aprile (Alora, Alisso, Molinia, Oleandro, Kalmia, Fragola, Arnica, Arabis botanical series plus Pina square), Formani (1815-1938 design codes with PVD matte nickel), and Artitec Mi Satori (Ton Premium monumental). Order before 8:00 PM? Then your door handle will be on your doormat the next working day.

Do you want to give your interior doors a timeless, refined look with handles in a soft, muted silver tone? Then matte nickel door handles are a beautiful choice. Matte nickel looks just a little warmer than cool stainless steel and has a calm, non-glossy finish on which fingerprints are barely noticeable. As a result, it suits both a classic 1930s home and a sleek, modern interior. You grip a handle dozens of times a day, so it is nice if it looks good and feels smooth in your hand.

On this page, we help you choose the right matte nickel door handle. You will read about the difference between a door handle, a door knob, and a knob handle, between electroplated and PVD matte nickel, and which brands we carry. We also explain which measurements to take and how to mount the handle and match it to your other hardware. This way, you know exactly what to look for before ordering. Read on!

What exactly is a matte nickel door handle?

A matte nickel door handle is an interior door handle in a muted, satin silver nickel tone used to open and close the door. In the Netherlands, we use the words 'door handle' and 'door handle' interchangeably; they refer to the same small lever used to operate the lock. The matte finish is non-reflective, meaning fingerprints are less noticeable and the handle has a calm, contemporary look. Nickel appears slightly warmer than stainless steel or chrome, making it suitable for almost any interior. It is one of the most timeless choices for your interior doors.

At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find matte nickel door handles from brands such as Intersteel, Aprile, Formani, and Artitec, ranging from affordable residential handles to premium versions with a PVD coating. The handles are available on round and square rosettes, in various shapes. If you would like to take a broader look at all the versions and colors, please view our door handle. This way, you can immediately see which handle suits your door.

What is the difference between a door handle, a doorknob, and a knob handle?

The difference between a door handle, a doorknob, and a knob handle lies in their shape and operation. Door handle and doorknob are two words for the same elongated lever that you push down to retract the bolt of the lock; it is the most ergonomic and common choice for Dutch interior doors. A knob handle is a round knob that you turn to operate the lock, a somewhat more classic, Art Deco-style design choice that requires slightly more manual force. A fixed doorknob, on the other hand, does not turn and serves only as a pull handle, intended for swing doors without a lock. This way, you choose the operation that suits each door.

In practice, you use a door handle or knob for most interior doors with a lock, as this is the most pleasant to use. For a specific design choice or a classic look, you might consider a knob handle, and for a swing door, a fixed knob. Which one you need therefore depends on the door and the desired style. If you are unsure about the options, our specialists are happy to help you decide.

What is the difference between electroplated and PVD matte nickel?

The difference between electroplated and PVD matte nickel lies in the coating technique and the lifespan. Electroplated matte nickel is a vapor-deposited nickel layer on a solid brass or steel core, with a hardness of approximately 600 to 800 HV. For an interior door that is not exposed to sun or rain, this is more than sufficient and, moreover, affordable. PVD matte nickel is a premium technique in which titanium nitride is applied under vacuum, with a hardness of 4000 to 4500 HV. This layer is many times more scratch-resistant and remains colorfast for fifteen years or longer.

In practice, galvanic matte nickel is perfectly adequate for a standard interior door, while for a heavily used door or a long-term investment, it is better to choose PVD. Intersteel, Aprile, and Artitec generally work with galvanic matte nickel, while Formani offers a PVD version, such as the 1932PR. Both finishes should be wiped clean with a damp microfiber cloth; avoid polishing paste, scouring pads, ammonia, and acetone, as these damage the matte texture. This ensures that every finish remains beautiful for years. If you are unsure about your choice, our specialists will be happy to assist you.

Which brands and models do we carry?

We carry four brands of matte nickel door handles, each with its own position. Intersteel has been the Dutch residential construction standard since 1959, with the widest range, from the classic Ton Basic with an ebony detail to sleek modern models such as the Bjorn, George, and Dean. Aprile is a Polish brand with Italian design and a botanical series with names like Alora, Molinia, and Oleandro, plus the square Pina, in electroplated matte nickel on a solid brass core. This ensures there is a suitable handle for every budget and style.

For the premium segment, there are Formani and Artitec. Formani represents Dutch design work with collections named after architectural eras, such as the 1815 and 1910 series, some featuring a PVD matte nickel coating. Artitec Mi Satori focuses on monumental renovations with versions such as the Ton Premium. If you are unsure whether to choose an affordable option or a premium one, our specialists are happy to help you decide. What measurements do you need and how do you install the handle?

For a matte nickel door handle, you need the spindle, the drilling distance, the backset, and the door thickness. For an interior door, the spindle is standard 8 mm square, the Dutch standard. The drilling distance between the screw holes is usually 38 mm center-to-center, and the backset of the lock in residential construction is typically around 50 mm. The rosette diameter is Ø50 to 52 mm round or 50 x 50 mm square. With these measurements, you can be sure that the handle fits your door and your lock.

Installation is easy to do yourself. Slide the square spindle through the handle hole of the mortise lock, place a handle on both sides, and secure it with the set screw. Then mount the rosettes with the supplied M4 screws, or click them into place for a concealed version. Finally, test whether the handle springs back smoothly without play. If you are replacing an existing handle, first measure your drilling distance so that you do not have to drill again. If you are unsure about the size, send a photo of your door to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl.

How do you coordinate it with your other seizures?

The best way to coordinate a matte nickel door handle is to match the matte nickel shade and rosette shape to your other hardware. Combine the handle with matching key and cylinder rosettes, hinges, and locks in the same finish so that the entire door appears as a unified whole. For example, if you choose round and matte nickel for one door, carry that theme through to all your interior doors. This creates a calm, cohesive look throughout your home. It appears neat and well-thought-out, even when guests come over.

When mixing brands, please note that matte and polished nickel differ visibly from each other, so maintain the same finish within a single door. For matching rosettes, please view our collection of nickel rosettes in the same shade. For a complete overview of everything in this finish, please view our collection of matte nickel door hardware. If you are unsure about the right combination, our specialists will be happy to put together a suitable package for you.
