What exactly is matte black front door hardware?
Matte black front door hardware is security hardware for your front door with a matte black finish. A complete set typically consists of an exterior handle or knob, an interior lever, built-in anti-core pulling protection, and an SKG certification. The matte black layer is applied using powder coating, acrylic lacquer, or a high-quality PVD coating, ensuring a sleek, modern look. As a result, it fits beautifully with a modern villa, an industrial interior, a converted factory building, or sleek new construction. It is the choice for those who find classic brass or nickel too warm.
Since around 2018, matte black has been the dominant color for front doors in new construction. The shade provides a strong, contemporary contrast against a light or wooden door and complements black frames and window profiles beautifully. Importantly, this attractive appearance is always combined with genuine burglar resistance; it is not decorative hardware, but security hardware. Which brands and models can you find here?
In this collection, you will find matte black front door hardware from renowned brands, with Intersteel, AXA, and Dieckmann as the leading names. Intersteel supplies, among other things, security hardware in PC55, PC72, and PC92, in oval and rectangular shapes, plus the Helena and an SKG3 front door set. AXA is known for the Edge Plus series with handles and D-pushers with anti-core pulling in all PC sizes. Dieckmann adds the Alpha line to this, featuring front and back door hardware in matte black. This ensures there is a suitable set for every front door and every security level.
The range is by far our largest category within black front door hardware, offering a wide choice of shapes and configurations. Whether you want a fixed handle with a knob, a modern push handle, or a version with two knobs for your back door, you will find it here in the same matte black shade. Because the brands supply all common PC sizes, the hardware fits virtually any cylinder lock. If you are unsure which brand or version suits you best, our specialists are happy to help. Feel free to send a photo of your current front door, and we will select the matching hardware for you.
What does the SKG quality mark mean for your front door?
The SKG quality mark indicates how long your front door hardware will hold back a burglar. One-star SKG represents approximately 15 seconds of resistance and is intended for an interior door or outbuilding. Two-star SKG offers about three minutes of resistance and is the minimum requirement for a front door under the Police Security Mark for Safe Living. Three-star SKG, also known as SKG3, holds out for about five minutes and is recommended for villas and homes with a higher risk. The more stars, the longer a burglar will be at it and the greater the chance that they will give up.
For most standard front doors, a two-star version is more than sufficient and meets your insurer's requirements. If you live in a detached house, a corner house, or a neighborhood with a higher rate of burglaries, SKG3 offers you extra security. The price difference is small compared to the peace of mind it provides. Always check exactly what your insurance requires, as a specific star level is sometimes mandatory for your coverage. This way, you can be sure you are covered when the time comes.
Why is core pull protection so important?
Core pulling protection is so important because it counters the most commonly used burglary method for the front door. It is a recessed steel ring around the cylinder that prevents a burglar from pulling out the cylinder core with a screw or a special puller. This so-called core pulling method is responsible for a large proportion of successful cylinder burglaries in the Netherlands. Without protection, a cylinder can sometimes be pulled out of the lock in half a minute. With good core pulling protection, this simply cannot be achieved within the certification period.
For the SKG3 classification, core pull protection is mandatory precisely because this is such a vulnerable point. With the matte black front door hardware in this collection, this protection is built in as standard, so you do not need to purchase a separate part for it. If you want to make your lock as secure as possible, combine the hardware with a good, certified cylinder from our collection of cylinders. When replacing, ensure that the cylinder does not protrude too far, as this makes it easier to break off. A flush-finished cylinder behind sturdy hardware is the safest combination.
Which PC size and which version do you choose?
Which PC size you choose depends on your lock: the PC size is the distance between the center of the handle and the center of the cylinder. PC55 is intended for an interior door with a cylinder lock and has no security function. PC72 is the standard size for most residential front doors. You use PC92 for heavy-duty security hardware or for oversized cylinder locks. Measure your existing lock or check your old hardware to know for sure which size you need.
In addition to the size, you also choose the version that suits your door. A fixed handle with a knob is the classic front door configuration and is considered the safest option. A D-shaped push handle with a knob block, as with the AXA Edge Plus, offers a more modern look with the same level of security. For a back door or patio door, a version with a knob on both sides is often more practical. To complete your entrance, coordinate the look with a matching matte black front door knob and a matching security rosette.
How do you measure your front door and how do you maintain the hardware?
You measure your front door by looking at four dimensions: the door thickness, the PC dimension, the spindle, and the size of the handle or knob. For front doors, the door thickness is usually between 38 and 65 mm and determines the required mounting length. The spindle on a front door is standard 8 mm square. You obtain the PC dimension from your lock, and you choose the handle or knob size based on its visual proportion to your door. If you are replacing existing hardware, send a photo of your door and your old hardware, along with a ruler, to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl for personal advice.
Maintaining matte black hardware is simple: wipe it with a damp microfiber cloth and some mild soap. Do not use a scouring pad, ammonia, or acetone, as these will damage the matte finish. Versions with a PVD coating are extra scratch-resistant and remain colorfast for 15 years or longer under the influence of sunlight, virtually maintenance-free. Once a year, apply a small amount of graphite lock lubricant to the keyhole of your cylinder. Avoid oil or penetrating oil, as these actually attract dust and dirt.
