What exactly is a brass doorknob?
A copper door handle is an interior door handle in a warm copper shade used to open and close the door. The warm, reddish-brown tone combines a classic metal look with a modern PVD technique, ensuring the color remains deep and colorfast. As a result, copper adds warmth to your interior door in a way that cooler stainless steel or harsher black do not. It pairs beautifully with a modern villa, a Scandinavian interior, a classic renovation, and an industrial loft. It is a shade for those seeking a distinctive, warm accent.
At Deurbeslag Expert, you will find brass door handles from brands such as STERK, Aprile, AXA, and HDD Pro, in matte and polished brass and related bronze tones. The handles are available with both rosettes and backplates, in various shapes and sizes. If you would like to take a broader look at all the finishes and colors, please view our door handle. This way, you can immediately see which handle suits your door.
Why do people choose copper for their interior doors?
People choose copper for their interior doors because it is the only metal with a genuine reddish-brown undertone, giving it an instant warm feel. Brass is yellower and can quickly appear somewhat too classic-luxurious in a modern interior, while nickel has a neutral, cooler silver tone that adds no warmth. Copper sits right in between: modern in finish, but warm in appearance. If you compare it to gold, gold is brighter and more pronounced, whereas copper comes across as calmer. It is precisely this understated warmth that appeals to many people in new builds or major renovations.
Copper is therefore frequently seen in the Scandinavian interior trend, on cabinets, lamps, and door handles. It pairs beautifully with natural materials such as wood, leather, and wool, making it an excellent fit for a warm, calm, modern interior. On an interior door, a copper handle adds just the right touch of character without screaming for attention. If you wish to furnish your entire home in this warm shade, you can do so with a wide range of copper hardware. In this way, copper becomes the unifying theme of your interior.
Which brands and models do we carry?
We carry five brands of brass door handles, each with its own character. STERK is a Dutch brand featuring modernist oval designs, such as the OVAL 1741, 1742, and 1743 in 8 mm and the special ultra-thin 3 mm model. Aprile, a Polish-Italian premium brand, supplies solid designer handles like the Dalia and Azalia on a round rosette and the Pina on a square rosette, all in matte copper PVD. With the Milan in bronze, AXA offers a convenient click system for quick installation. This ensures there is a suitable handle for every style and budget.
STERK’s ultra-thin model, the 3 mm OVAL 1750, deserves special mention: whereas rosettes are typically 7 to 10 mm thick, this version creates a virtually invisible transition between rosette and door, for an extra minimalist look. The solid Aprile handles, on the other hand, are made from a single block of metal and therefore feel heavier and more solid in the hand than hollow handles. HDD Pro complements the range with the Pro Vera in lacquered brass, a warm gold-red variant. If you are undecided between a sleek or a solid model, our specialists will be happy to help you make the right choice.
What is the difference between matte copper, polished copper, and bronze?
The difference between matte copper, polished copper, and bronze lies in the shine and tint of the finish. Matte copper, such as the Aprile Dalia, Azalia, and Pina, and the ultra-thin STERK model, has a satin-matte appearance on which fingerprints are less noticeable. Polished copper, such as the STERK OVAL 1741, 1742, and 1743, is mirror-like and has a pronounced copper sheen. Bronze, such as the AXA Milan, has a copper tone with a slightly darker bronze color. Which one you choose depends on your interior and how prominently you want the copper to stand out.
All PVD finishes share the major advantage of being extremely scratch-resistant and remaining colorfast for fifteen years or longer, even with daily use. This is ideal for an interior door, as the handle is only exposed to hand contact and dust, and not sun or rain. In practice, this means decades without visible change. Maintenance is minimal: wipe the handle with a damp microfiber cloth and mild soap, and avoid scouring pads and ammonia. This way, your brass handle remains warm and beautiful for years.
How do you measure a brass doorknob?
You measure a brass door handle by paying attention to the spindle, the rosette size, and the door thickness. For an interior door, the spindle is standard 8 mm square, the Dutch standard; note that this is not interchangeable with the thinner 7 mm spindle of a window handle. The rosette size is usually round with a diameter of approximately 49 to 55 mm, or square measuring 53 by 53 mm, as with the Aprile Pina. Also measure your door thickness, typically 38 to 44 mm for an interior door. With these measurements, you can be sure that the handle fits your door and your lock.
If you are replacing an existing handle, also measure the drilling distance of the screw holes and look for the same dimensions so that you do not have to drill again. If you choose a version with a rosette, it looks best on a newer door with a clean recess. With a new door, you are free to choose and are not tied to anything. If you are unsure about the correct size, send a photo of your door to info@deurbeslag-expert.nl. Our advisors will be happy to take a look with you.
How do you combine copper with your interior?
You combine copper most beautifully by being consistent and sticking to one metal family. Choose copper handles on your interior doors, copper knobs on your kitchen cabinets, and perhaps a copper faucet, so that the warmth builds up into a calm, cohesive theme. If you mix copper on different doors within the same room with chrome or black, the look quickly becomes cluttered. A beautiful exception is black door frames, which serve as a calm background against which copper stands out beautifully. In this way, copper becomes the connecting element in your interior.
For the bathroom or toilet, coordination is especially important; combine your copper handle there with a matching copper escutcheon and cylinder plates in the same shade. For the hinges, choose a neutral copper or matte black finish so that they remain quietly in the background. For versions with escutcheons, take a look at our collection of copper door handles with escutcheons, and for the complete range, at our collection of copper door hardware. If you are unsure about the right combination, our specialists will be happy to help you.
